WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Two horses were euthanized this month after contracting a mosquito-borne disease, known as Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis, or EEE.

The infected horses were from Bladen and Robeson Counties. They are the first reported cases of the disease in horses this year.

Last week, New Hanover County reported EEE in a sentinel chicken flock.

The disease causes inflammation or swelling of the brain and spinal cord and is often fatal. People, horses and birds can all be infected with the mosquito-borne disease.
