RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina government office will continue to verify additional victims of the state's defunct forced sterilization program even though legislators failed to set aside money to compensate those who are still alive.

The state said Thursday the North Carolina Justice for Sterilization Victims Foundation is again examining new requests from people who believe they or someone they know were sterilized through the program during the 20th century.

The foundation stopped taking new requests last month when it appeared operating funds would end, but the Legislature passed a bill directing the foundation to keep going with $128,000 from the Department of Administration.

The foundation so far has confirmed 161 victims, nearly all of whom are still living. More requests are pending. Foundation staff has been reduced from three to one.
