WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Across the country people are coming together to help the families of the victims of the movie theater shooting in Colorado, including help from right here in Wilmington.
For a restaurant at Mayfaire, the shooting across the country hits especially close to home.
Alex Sullivan was excited to kick off his 27th birthday with a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises.” He tweeted before the show, “Oh man one hour til the movie and it’s going to be the best birthday ever.”
Sullivan, who had a birthday and a wedding anniversary over the weekend, died at the Cinema 16 theater in Aurora, CO. As his family searches for peace, his work family is trying to help.
Sullivan was an employee of a Red Robin in colorado and reportedly had just gotten off work before he went to the movie.
Workers at Red Robin at Mayfaire in Wilmington say they are hosting fundraisers this week to help Sullivan’s family financially.
“We consider ourselves a very big family, and our team members are an extension of that family,” said Brian Dunmire, who manages the Red Robin at Mayfaire. “Our staff felt compelled to do this, to help raise money for rehab and other expenses and to support one another.”
Dunmmire says his staff feels particularly close to the situation, because many of them too went to a midnight showing of the movie.
“That could have been any place, any person, but it was another group similar to our team just going out to have a good time and see a movie,” Dunmire said.
Dunmire says he was told other employees of the Colorado store were injured in the shooting and are still in critical condition.
Thursday, Red Robin in Mayfaire will donate their time and tips to the victims of the Colorado shooting. Friday, they will host a lemonade stand out front of the store as well.
