RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Administrators at a North Carolina prison are monitoring a hunger strike by a few inmates demanding better medical care and living conditions.

Nine inmates at Central Prison in Raleigh began skipping meals last week after issuing a list of demands that included law books, toilet brushes, supplies for cleaning cell walls and windows. They also want to be allowed to shower without wearing restraints.

Prison spokeswoman Pam Walker said Thursday the number refusing meals has dropped to four. All are being held on control status, where inmates spend 23 hours a day alone in their cells.

Walker says the medical staff is monitoring those not eating and will “intervene” if necessary.

An online petition is calling for a protest outside the prison Sunday in solidarity with the striking inmates.

Perhaps the victims of the crimes committed by these on the “hunger strike” could donate the supplies, what a joke, they are lucky that they are fed and sheltered, if they were in any other country, they would have been dead a long time ago. If this country does not wake up and start punishing people to fit the crime the crime rate will continue to rise along with more of the senseless crimes. The criminals know they will get nothing more than a few years behind bars and early release because the prisons are overcrowded if they behave! They get better medical and dental care than a lot of hard working people!

If they don’t want to eat so be it. Thats one more that the tax payer doesn’t have to support. And further more if they don’t like the accomations they should remember to keep their nose clean and not go there.
