WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear Community College held summer graduation Friday night at the Schwartz Center. Over 800 students were be eligible to receive their associate degree, diploma or certificate at the event. Students enrolled in college transfer and dozens of technical and vocational programs also participated.
Melissa Torres was one CFCC student who walked the walk, she is one of 367 students graduating from the GED program
“It means I can look at my kids and tell them they have to finish school, it means a big deal. It opens more opportunities for me, so I’ll be better able to take care of my kids”. Torres said. They’re really proud, they watched me go to school every day. My two older children took care of the two younger ones during the summer, so they sacrificed a little bit but at the same time they were really happy that I got back into school because they know it made me happy”. She explained.
This is one step that could launch an extended career in education as well as improve self-esteem. Melissa and many others are very encouraged by the GED program.
