WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) — Ready or not the start of high school football practice is here. The regular season will begin on August 17.
With Monday’s overcast skies the players got a break from the heat. At Laney High School the Buccaneers hit the field early in the morning. Greg Ditz is the Laney head coach. “I think it puts a little more pressure on our seniors to step up in order to take bigger roles than the year before,” Ditz said. “It puts a little pressure on some key guys, younger guys we have in some skill spots. All in all the summer has been great.”
While Laney hit the field monday morning the players at North Brunswick High School in Leland waited until the late afternoon to hit the practice field. Garry Bishop is the head coach at North Brunswick. For the first time ever he’s now the dean of head football coaches in our neck of the woods. Bishop took over the scorpions football program in 1994. “Everyone is excited. The players and the coaching staff because this is one of the best days of the year, the first day of football practice,” Bishop said. “All the coaches feel that way. We’re excited to be here and excited to have a large number. We expect the kids to work hard and we’re really looking forward to it.”
RALEIGH,NC (NC State sports information release) — NC State head football coach Tom O’Brien has announced that safety Tim Buckley has joined the Wolfpack football program. The Cardinal Gibbons High School graduate, who red-shirted last season at Penn State, will begin practice at the team’s first workout on Tuesday afternoon.
“I am excited to be a member of the NC State Wolfpack,” said Buckley. “The opportunity to come here and play at my state university, so close to home, was something that I couldn’t pass up.”
Buckley, who will be eligible to compete in 2012, will be listed as a redshirt freshman and will have four years to play. He finished 2012 spring practice listed as the backup at free safety on the Nittany Lion depth chart.
At Cardinal Gibbons, he was the Carolina 3-A Conference Offensive Player of the Year in 2010 and played running back, linebacker and safety during his prep career. He rushed for almost 1,800 yards, scoring 36 touchdowns as a senior, helping lead the Crusaders to an 11-3 record as a senior and a 12-2 mark as a junior.
EDENTON,NC (Sharks news release) — Once again at Hicks Field, the Edenton Steamers (17-8, 35-16) wasted no time putting runs on the board against the Wilmington Sharks (13-10, 29-21) as they scored five of their runs in a 9-3 win during the first two innings.
After the Sharks left the bases loaded in the top of the first, Edenton took advantage of an error to score three unearned runs. One of the runs came on a Michael Camporeale home run, and the Steamers also had a walk, a single and a double in the frame.
Two more runs were added in the second inning, both scoring on a Jason Kanzler home run that was the team’s 43rd of the season to set a new franchise record.
Spencer Branigan extended that record with yet another solo shot in the fifth, making the score 6-0 through five innings.
Wilmington finally got on the board in large part because of a pair of stolen bases by Casey Goss in the top of the sixth inning. Scott Coleman was credited with the RBI on a single up the middle.
Edenton again responded with an additional three runs in the bottom of the sixth, using two walks, three singles and a hit by pitch to bring the runners across the plate.
In their most productive frame of the night, the Sharks scored twice in the top of the eighth when Aaron Preston and Scott Coleman both scored on a double off the bat of Connor Mitchell.
Only one home game remains in the regular season, Thursday against Thomasville. The Sharks enjoy an off day on Tuesday before a suspended-game doubleheader in Morehead City on Wednesday.
