MOREHEAD CITY,NC (Sharks release) -- Despite strong pitching performances, the Wilmington Sharks (13-12, 29-23) dropped both ends of a twin bill for the first time this season at Morehead City (15-12, 25-29) by final scores of 2-1 and 8-3 at Big Rock Stadium.
The first game of the twin bill was the resumption of a suspended game from July 11, and was picked up with no score in the middle of the fourth inning. Morehead City got a leadoff single then a ground rule double to score the first run of the day. Wilmington drew two walks and got a bunt single from Brad Shaban to load the bases with nobody out in the top of the fifth, but could not score.
Casey Goss stretched a single into a double to lead off the eighth inning, then scored when Aaron Preston tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt but reached on a throwing error by pitcher Evan Zerff.
After Stephen Vaughan exited the game with a strong eight-inning total performance, Morehead City’s Sam Ott drew a walk and scored on a Corey Bass walk-off double to give the Marlins a 2-1 victory in the opener.
To start the nightcap, the Sharks got a run on the board in the top of the first as Goss led off with a single then came around to score on Lloyd Enzor’s double.
Each team scored twice in the third, with Preston and Scott Coleman each coming across to take a 3-0 lead before Morehead City bounced back with both an unearned run and an earned run against Blaze Tart in the bottom half of the third.
Yet another Morehead City run came across in the bottom of the fourth before a disastrous defensive inning in the fifth when Wilmington gave up a total of four runs. Just one of those was earned, on a wild pitch, with the Sharks committing a pair of errors. Once again in the sixth frame, an error allowed the Marlins to tack on an extra unearned run to extend their lead to 8-3. Wilmington loaded the bases with one out in the seventh but a line drive and a play at the plate ended the game with no additional scoring.
Just one game remains in the regular season, with the Sharks hosting the Thomasville HiToms on Thursday before the Petitt Cup Playoffs begin. With Forest City sweeping Columbia on Wednesday, the Blowfish will be Wilmington’s first round opponent in the postseason. Seeding will be determined in Thursday night’s action, with Columbia controlling the fourth seed; therefore, the location of Saturday's first round playoff game is not known yet.
