BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- In a two-county sting operation, sheriff's deputies coordinated to bust a dog breeding operation Friday afternoon. It was profitable for the owners, but deplorable for the animals.

"I'm shocked to say the least," Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram said. "Personally I've never seen anything quite like this. The inside of the residences and behind the residence are some of the worst conditions I've ever experienced on anything I've ever been on.”

An anonymous tip led law enforcement to a house at 2059 Mako Road in Brunswick County, where the Sheriff's Office and Humane Society found conditions they called horrible.

The house had dogs packed together in dirty conditions with no air conditioning.

"There are approximately 100 to 120 animals in this house. This is a breeding facility. The staging area for this is in New Hanover (County)," said, Kim Alboum, North Carolina Director of the Humane Society of the US, who coordinated today's raid with law enforcement. "This is where all the puppies are born and where all the mothers are, and this is a puppy mill."

New Hanover County Sheriff's deputies raided another house near UNCW and found more dogs involved in the breeding operation.

Brunswick County Sheriff's deputies have arrested Amelia and Andrew Millis in connection with the operation and the filthy conditions of the animals.

Both Brunswick County and new Hanover County Sheriff's offices will continue to investigate and determine what charges the Millises will face.

puppy mill bust

Sick people for what they were doing. person who told use to read the the Bible and find out where animals were rated needs to re-read Bible. Don't believe animal torture and cruelty are mentioned to be acceptable. All other comments are same as mine: put Millis away in a crowded cage with 100 others, no air heat, exposed to diseases oh, and don't forget to break their jaws and take out their nails first! Happy folks they'd be. Lots of us would sure like to be the judge on that case. Beyond sickening is all I can say.

adoption

Could anyone tell me where to go to adopt one of these dogs. Thanks

I heard on the radio you can

I heard on the radio you can contact the rescue shelter at www.raceshelter.org, there is a phone number to call on the website.

brunswick county raid

Funny thing is ive seen the location in person when i rescued the ducks and 30+ chickens spca and the others left with no food and noone to take of ..guess they wouldnt bring good adoption fees for spca to make more money on, i took pics, the place was nothing like they described it, so enjoy ranting and hoping for the death or punishment of anouther human hyprocrites!!

humane society

they don't have room to talk they murder many animals nothing gets said on that but lets stop the cute dogs everyone wants and let the big ugly dogs noone wants as a pet keep coming

Look here people! These two

Look here people!

These two people may have been wrong in having more dogs then they could care for, but they have not killed anyone here or murdered anyone, so why a high bond, when there is others just like them out in this world?

These two peoples bond is like what a murderer would get if they killed someone!!

You people who are making a big deal over this, need to read your Bibles more about people on Earth and animals are listed as which is important.

How can you charge someone when there is no law in force for the charge? Can anyone answer that for me?

Really?

You're right. There "is" others out there just like them, so hopefully the high bond will make the others think twice about their own actions.

As to your question about laws, I'll bite! There are animal cruelty laws in place, which include very simple things like access to food & clean water, that were broken. Having untreated parasite infections to the point of needing blood transfusions or untreated broken jaws also falls under negligence as an owner. Whether you have 1 dog or 150 dogs in this condition, it is against the law.

The stricter laws some are (rightly) calling for are in regards to to over-breeding for profit, period. Laws that would stop these backyard puppy millers from setting up "shop" and having this many dogs in the first place.

Perhaps you should spend more time helping the least of us - suffering animals included - and less time preaching.

Puppy mill bust in Brunswick county

Nothing makes me any madder than someone treating innocent dogs to such horrible conditions. The police should put the Mills>the owners of the puppy mill in cages in the same trailer with no air or heat!!!!!!~!~!~!~``I hope the Mills get severly punished.

Straight to jail................

Bring this animal and her husband straight to jail. Do not pass go and do not collect $200.00!!!!!!!!! They had the same thing going in Wilmington for years. If she is convicted, like a sex offender she should have to register as an animal offender and NEVER be allowed to possess an animal ever again!!!

Before you get into an outrage. I am not trying to compare a sex offender to an animal offender. I was just using that as an example.

To The Owners of the Puppy Mill

I have to say to the owners of the puppy mills along with any undiscovered, You Sicken Me. I couldn't be more happy that your operation was shut down and the animals rescued. Do you realize what you do to these animals? Do you care?
Now its up to the county officials to salvage what life they can for these animals. They will need veterinarian care and who knows what other issues you have caused. I hope that these animals can find new homes and adapt to them. I work for a veterinarian office and know the problems that neglect can cause. Your horrible human beings and you deserve much more than what is coming to you.
To the county officials, veterinarians, and volunteers who are going to be helping rescue, treat and relocate these animals...."Thank you".

Another reason to adopt

It's a shame but these puppy mills do exist all over the US. in addition to the good breeders. By buying puppies we create a money source for them. There are so many wonderful dogs in Paw Prints that need adopting, why pay money for a dog?
Please adopt your next dog/friend :)

This is why stronger legislation should be passed!

This is the reason that NC needs to pass more legislation giving rights to local animal control officers to inspect the facilities of breeders in their county. Such legislation has been proposed but is always set aside. Breeders need to be regulated locally and regionally to prevent situations like this.

Puppy Mill

Amelia and Andrew Millis? OK so shouldn't you have expected a Puppy "Mill" from the millis? So sad these animals had to be born into such a horrible situation.

puppy mill

Any breeder that is not breeding for the betterment of the breed, such as breeding out bad hips, knees, eyes, skin, behavior, etc is just a back yard breeder or puppy miller out for a quick buck. If people would adopt, then spay or neuther instead of buyng these poor overbred animals these money grubbers would disappear!

North Carolina and the US

North Carolina and the US needs to have tougher laws for animal cruelty. You hear about it all the time and animals have rights too. If you can't take care of yourself, you surely should not have animals. I think the owners of puppy mills should have to suffer like their dogs should and see how they like it! Remember ANIMALS HAVE FEELINGS TOO!!! DC cares

While awaiting trial,

and as a condition of bail, why not assign them pen duty at the zoo on Carolina Beach Road? Especially allow them to clean the pens which hold the big cats.

With raw meat

And they need to have chunks of raw meat in their pockets while in the cages with the cats.

Let He Who has no SIN cast the first stone

What they did is wrong and justice should definitely be served. We should NEVER. speak ill will on anyone regardless because if we all examine ourselves many of us should sit down and be quiet because it could be us in trouble. Truth be told if some of the mess we did was uncovered we wouldn't be able to show our face in public. You know who you are . Amen
