NEW YORK (AP) — For the first time in its 80-year history, Augusta National Golf Club has female members.

The home of the Masters has invited former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore to become the first women in green jackets when the club opens for a new season in October.

Both women have accepted. The invitations end a 10-year controversy that began when former club chairman Hootie Johnson said the club would not be pressured “at the point of a bayonet” to change its all-male membership.

Augusta National chairman Billy Payne described Monday’s announcement as a “joyous occasion” as he took the rare step of confirming its latest two members. He says it is a “significant and positive time” at the club. Augusta typically does not discuss membership.

What a shame. Years of tradition down the drain

Given that the membership list of Augusta National is secret and has never been made public, how would you know the political affiliation of the members? It’s been the Democrats, in large part, in the South that have been the ones denying civil rights to blacks. One needs to look no further than the KKK.

If the membership is secret then please explain how it is that they announced their two new members? Couldn’t they just have said Augusta National now has female members? I strongly suggest this announcement is as much political as moral. Anyone on the planet who doesn’t think people like Carl Rove, Dick Channey or the Koop Brothers can’t get to Hootie would be mistaken. I guess Hilary Clinton or Golf great hall of famer Nancy Lopez wouldn’t be up to Augusta standards?

Will do anything to con women and blacks into a softer relationship.
Look at this timing, it comes when the republicans are at their lowest point with women and minorities. Rep. Akin slipped and said exactly what white republican men think about women this past weekend. Appointing two ladies to Augusta National at this time is as cheap as it gets. Republicans have been playing their second class attitude toward women and minorities for too long now, they realize it’s hurting them, so now they become the wolf in sheep’s clothing!
    Don’t be fooled!!!

So now, in addition to all of the other other-worldly prognostications you seem to make on a regular basis, you’re now claiming that the Augusta National Golf Club is an adjunct of the GOP?

I agree that appointing just two women is a sham but it certainly has nothing to do with the Republican Party per se. That is patently ridiculous.

I also find it ironic that you would post a piece advocating that anyone not be fooled, regardless of who they are. You certainly seem more than comfortable attempting to fool Wilmington taxpayers out of their hard earned dollars so that a select few insiders can profit from the construction of a stadium. That doesn’t seem to be a problem at all.

Perhaps it all comes down to what might potentially benefit you personally.

Can you not just see the Kardashian entourage barnstorming Augusta?
    That is a show I would watch,they look on the members faces,with their I-Phones and pictures,oh lord…

  • 1981duke

Paula Creamer or Ani Tsang playing Tiger Woods,Phil,Ernie at 7700 yards?
Sure, they would 15-20 strokes behind, obviously you have never played.

  • Vog46

A major played by both sexes would be watched by both sexes.
It would be huge for the sport.
Now do I think Natalie Gulbis would beat Rory or Bubba on a PGA course?
No way – but what THAT type of tournament would do for the sport would be immeasurable.
There should be a way to even up the physical differences

    Than we are fine

Finally Augusta National has recognized women as a part of golf. We have been playing for a few centuries. Brilliant! We can now be proud of American golf. Thanks.

If women wanted a golf course so bad why didn’t they just build their own Augusta Nationals???, does this mean the guys have to share their locker room too?

  • Vog46

Glad they finally did this. Now it’s time to open the flood gates and let more lesser known women in.
I would even propose that Golf host at least one Major tournament that is open to players of both sexes. From what I’ve seen I believe golf is a game of finesses more so than strength and what ever advantage men have in strength the woman more than make up for in “touch”
It would be good for the game…….

  • ClevelandSteamer

I would propose that is the most ludicrous statement ever. Please think before you type.

Can not wait to see Tiger,Phil,Bubba,John Daly in kilts!
    Sometimes change…….is just change.
I like stoic Augusta just like it is.
    What is next,”Bushwood”.

Hopefully men and women will have to play by exactly the same rules with no consideration given for gender. They wanted it, they got it, so let them all be equal.

I heard they will only be allowed to play the Par 3 course :-(

  • ChefnSurf

They invited two, repeat two, women into the good-old-boys club out of all the women in the U.S. and this is a victory for women?

Inviting just two women ends a 10-year controversy and is defined as a joyous occasion?

    You’re kidding me, right?

Seems more like a well-pandered slap in the face.
