WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A very frustrating situation. That's how Wilmington City Councilwoman Laura Padgett referred to the process of bringing a hotel downtown, next to the Wilmington Convention Center.

Tuesday night, Wilmington City Council approved extending negotiations with the company looking to develop the hotel.

What was supposed to be wrapped up in September, negotiations will now be delayed by four months to January 2013 as Harmony Hospitality LLC works to bring an Embassy Suites hotel downtown.

Because of complications with the site, including problems dealing with water lines, easements, and the size of the lot, the development company has asked for the extension. Also, because Embassy Suites is a subsidiary of Hilton, Harmony must apply for a franchise license, which could cause concerns about competition with a Hilton hotel already downtown.

Council also unanimously approved a two percent salary increase for both City Manager Sterling Cheatham and City Clerk Penelope Sidbury.

The 2012-13 budget gave all city employees the increase, however council evaluated the city manager and clerk separately.

Off with their heads !!

Easements, the size of the lot, the franchise license were all items that simply had to be in place before a deal could be finalized. Council members had to be aware of that. Regardless of that, they chose to announce the hotel was a done deal, just as they had countless times before.

There can be only two possible reasons for that happening: They either don't have the competence to deal with these types of issues or they choose to not speak the truth. Maybe both.

Either way, they don't sound like the kind of leaders anyone should blindly follow down the proverbial rabbit hole in search of a new taxpayer funded stadium. The Mad Hatter may get a cut of the action, the Cheshire Cat may be sporting his sly smile with an inside deal, but the taxpayers will just be the recipient of the Queen of Hearts famous phrase "Off with their heads !!"

Remove the hat!!!!

Padgett remove the hat please!! I know there is a double standard to men and women in regards to removing their cover during the National Anthem or Pledge of Allegiance, however to me it was disrespectful. I am not trying to pick a fight or anything, I just believe anything showing and/or giving respect to this Country should be done in the most respectful manner possible. That means removing the cover(hat). Maybe there are medical issues I am unaware of, maybe it is none of my business, it just struck a nerve.
