WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AP) — Republican Pat McCrory has won the endorsement of North Carolina’s leading small business group in this fall’s race for governor.

The state chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business gave the former Charlotte mayor its backing at an event Thursday at a Winston-Salem manufacturer of laboratory furnaces, ovens and heaters.

McCrory received a similar endorsement in his unsuccessful gubernatorial bid in 2008, but this year’s Democratic competitor had ties to NFIB as well. Democratic Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton held many round-table discussions with small businesses across this state early in his term and backed small-business friendly legislation while in the Senate.

State director Gregg Thompson said McCrory has proven leadership abilities and is committed to reducing taxes, improving education and making regulations sensible.
