GREENVILLE, NC (AP) - Rio Johnson has won the lengthy four-man battle for East Carolina's quarterback job.
Coach Ruffin McNeill on Monday released his depth chart for the opener against Appalachian State on Saturday. Johnson was listed as the starter with Shane Carden as the backup and senior Brad Wornick behind them.
McNeill says Johnson stepped forward recently and "we had to get one guy ready to play."
Johnson is a junior and the only returning player who took a snap last season for the Pirates. He was 20 of 29 for 157 yards with an interception in four games behind productive two-year starter Dominique Davis.
The competition between Johnson, Carden, Wornick and redshirt freshman Cody Keith to replace Davis and run East Carolina's pass-heavy spread lasted through spring ball and preseason camp.
