WILMINGTON, NC (AP) — Leaders in the Wilmington area want to meet with North Carolina transportation officials to discuss the possibility of building a toll road almost 10 miles long that would be known as the Cape Fear Skyway.

The region’s Transportation Advisory Committee voted Wednesday to hold a workshop to discuss the $1 billion Skyway and other alternatives for crossing the Cape Fear River. No date has been set.

There are currently only two bridges across the river linking Brunswick and New Hanover counties in the Wilmington area.

Alternatives to the Skyway bridge could include replacing the existing Cape Fear Memorial Bridge or adding a new span.
