WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Every day cab companies across Wilmington receive hundreds of phone calls. Wednesday night two cab companies received calls that are every driver's worst nightmare.

Around 11 p.m. a driver for Kat's Taxi was dispatched to pick up a fare on Market Street. When he got there the passenger pulled a gun on the driver and demanded money before running off. Police believe five hours later the same person robbed a driver from Yellow Cab on Ann Street.

Thursday afternoon, police arrested Eddie Leon McCracken, 48, for the crimes.

The crimes have cab drivers around Wilmington on edge.

"I think more cabbies need to arm themselves, because the city is getting way too dangerous," taxi driver James Gallagher said. "All it would take is one cab driver to defend themselves to stop this nonsense."

"Police need to patrol more in certain areas, not just down on front and Market Street," cab driver James Allen said. "They need to be on second, third and a little bit further out where people are walking home. That's where we are getting robbed at."

Police arrested Eddie Leon McCracken on Thursday afternoon. Police say he is believed to be involved in both robberies.

i think cabbies should have

i think cabbies should have a bullet proof shield between he and his passenger. also i think they should have a way to lock the doors if the passenger does not want to pay.

Taxi cab security

Taxi Cab companies can easily install Vidio Cameras in the Taxi Cabs --- and or ---- have a: 'rider ' accompany taxi cab drivers between the hours between 5 PM and 6 AM . 2 on 1 is a better odds for the Taxi Driver and the Taxi Driver also has a witness on board. Robbers only want money -- and its insured. Carrying a loaded gun in a taxi cab is not a wise solution.

Carrying a firearm is not a wise decision?

I'm alive today because I had a firearm available when I needed it.

Your mindset is why crime runs rampant across this country. First, if the money isn't enough, armed robbers sometimes get angry and kill you anyway. Second, the simple fact that the money "is insured" doesn't impart a right to steal to the robber or justify a "who cares" attitude toward the owner/custodian of the cash. Robbing an individual is wrong, but robbing from an insurance company is somehow more acceptable?

There's an old saying, that "It's better to die on your feet than live on your knees." We're going to be living on our knees as as a society as long as people are reluctant to kill criminals who richly deserve being killed.
