WILMINGTON, NC (NEWS RELEASE) -- Crews with Cape Fear Public Utility Authority will begin smoke testing operations on targeted areas of the sanitary sewer system beginning Wednesday (weather permitting). Notices were delivered to properties located in the affected area on Monday. Testing will start on Wednesday and will be conducted between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. through Friday.
·Smoke testing is an efficient, cost effective way to locate and identify inflow sources within the sewer system. Inflow sources include roof drains, yard and area drains, foundation drains, abandoned building sewers, faulty connections, illegal connection, and storm water drainage system cross connections.
·Special, non toxic smoke is forced through sewer lines and helps locate places where storm and other surface waters are entering the sewers. Smoke testing also helps reveal sources of sewer odor.
·Smoke should not enter the home – smoke entering the home could indicate defective plumbing or drain traps that have dried up.
·Prior to testing, it's recommended that residents in the testing area pour or run water into all drains for about one minute – especially those used infrequently.
·Homeowners do not need to be home during testing and crews will not need to enter the home or business.
·The fire department and emergency services are notified of the scheduled testing.
·Rain date: Monday, September 17
While most residents/businesses will never see or smell the smoke, CFPUA wants people to be aware of this procedure by providing as much information as possible about the testing.
