WASHINGTON (USATODAY.COM) -- Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is suggesting some kind of punishment for the retired Navy SEAL who wrote a book about the Osama bin Laden military operation.

"I think we have to take steps to make clear to him and to the American people that we're not going to accept this kind of behavior," Panetta said today on CBS This Morning.

Wilmington StarNews Editor Kevin Maurer co-authored the book "No Easy Day" with the SEAL.

Club a seal but wikileaks ok

Why will you punish a US Navy Seal, someone who served our counrty for telling the truth but you won't do anything to wikileaks founder lasange?
This exactly the crap we get under the Obama Administration..

paying witness;jury tampering allegations in Wilmington 10 trial

Big exposures continue this week in the Wilmington 10 false imprisonment case with a box of 40 year old written prosecutor notes, a paid witnesss scandal along with new KKK jury tampering allegations

LOL

First it's Assange. Second, this seal isn't immune to the LAW. He took an OATH to keep secrets SECRET...he didn't. He deserves punishment..PERIOD. From a SPECOPS Veteran!

If he had truly done

If he had truly done something that goes against the UCMJ, then they would have held him accountable by now. My guess is that his book has caused embarrassment to the Idiot in Chief and they are trying to do damage control.

This is definitely a case of let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Those in the administration will not be holding themselves to the same judgment as they are levying against this man, therefore they should leave him be.

anything to protect Obama

anything to protect Obama and his false hero narrative. Gutsy call my a## any one would have and should have made that call and for
the Vice president to publicly reveal the name of the seal team
is not only dangerous to the seals and their families it was just plain stupid.

The only thing this

The only thing this controversy will accomplish is greater book sales.

Good Book

I served 30 years in the USAF, 23 in Special Operations and in those years worked with many special operators from the Special Forces, Rangers and Seal Teams. I also read this book in two days after it hit the store shelves. The author clearly states that the manuscript was reviewed by lawyers to insure that no classified information was revealed. Having had a TS clearance myself, I didn't see anything that could be construed as classified.

I think that the main reason this Seal wrote the book was to set the record straight about how things really went the night Bin Laden was killed. One of the things that the government (Obama) told us and would have us believe that OBL was armed and posed an immediate threat to the assaulters. According to the book, this is not really the case. Imagine that! It wouldn't be the first time politicians of any stripe lied and made their own political points off the backs of military guys such as those in Seal 6.

In the end he exposed the fact that the American people were lied to on some level about the events the night OBL was killed. What!! The government lying to us, say it isn't so! So now, Panetta and others have their panties in a wad because they are embarrassed and in my view for no other reason. It's been said for the past few days that the pentagon is 'reviewing' the book to see if there is any classified information that has been revealed. Oh please!! I read the book in two days. How long does it take for the legal weenies to do the same? Plus, with all the pre-release press this book received, I have no doubt that someone with some authority under the guise of 'national security' had access to that manuscript and if there was one shread of classified information in it it's publication and release would have been stopped immediately.

On the other hand, the author did sign a non-disclousure agreement before he left the military. I signed one when I retired and they are fairly comprehensive. While he apparently didn't disclose anything that was classified it could be said that he shouldn't have written about their tactics and possibly other sensitive information. If he faces any charges or punishment it will be more about embarrassing the president and other top officials than disclosing information that is pretty much available through other sources.

First

I have NOT read the book. Second, as a SPECOPS veteran myself, there are things you just don't talk about. Missions whos details aren't meant to be divulged to your fellow military members, much less the civilian public. As far as lawyers looking the book over...I trust a lawyer about as much as I trust a politician! Just because a lawyer said it was OK, doesn't mean it WAS OK. If he wasn't able to keep his mouth shut about such things, he shouldn't have been a Seal!

You must be a stolen valor

You must be a stolen valor recipient. "Specops veteran" my ass. First, Special ops do not go around throwing that out. Second, why should he be punished? The media and politicians keep throwing out the mission and what they think happened, why cant he defend himself and his brothers with what actually happened? There wasnt any details that werent already leaked.

Did you read the book?

If you have not read the book how can you comment he should be punished? He is very clear at the beginning of the book about his intentions and they did not include revealing anything that would endanger his fellow Seals or the USA. His only danger I believe is from the administration. As some of the other commenters state, most of it we already know from news after the attack and this is just his first person account.

I think that he should get

I think that he should get the same punishement that Bill Clinton received for lying to a federal grand jury. Ponder that Panetta...

Sorry

. . . but ANY service member who divulges our country's propriety information for monetary gain SHOULD be punished, and punished well.

But what about the people above the SEAL...

Mr. Panetta? This is a political witch hunt because the book embarrasses the administration due to their own leaks and as the SEAL referred to it: a laughable "Hollywood" account of the raid. That and describing Biden's lame jokes and buffoonish behavior in front of the SEAL team.

If the administration can oooz information about this raid, this guy should be able to as well. They were at the White House eating pizza while this guy hunting down the most wanted man on planet Earth. The Teleprompter-in-Chief was community organizing while this SEAL was serving on 13 consecutive combat deployments.

The night of the raid, within an hour of Obama's speech, I heard a NBC reporter state that it was Navy SEALs who conducted the raid. A little later, specific references to DevGru were made. A couple of days later, I knew from television that DevGru's Red Squadron conducted the raid. That's about 50 guys. The leaks from above this guy narrowed this down to a dangerous level. The damage was done before these guys were back on US soil. Fox recently reported that one of the DevGru Gold Squadron SEALs, who was killed when his helicopter was shot down last year, called his mother after the raid and asked her to remove all references to him on her Facebook page because he felt all associated with DevGru were in danger. I read this book last week and was surprised at how much of it I already knew due to just television. His specific thoughts and emotions were all new of course but if this guy gets into trouble, a whole lot of people need to follow.

Punish a genuine hero if you must. Let's see how that works out for the Democratic party at the ballot box over the next few election cycles.

Panetta: Navy SEAL writer should be punished

The information below comes from a article from Judicial Watch: Obama's CIA Let Filmmakers 'Deep Dive' into Classified Material for bin Laden Film. If the information below from that article is true please tell me how it is any different for the Obama administration and the CIA to work with "filmmakers" than the Navy Seal is to write a book??? Sorry I forgot the book is coming out first so no big propaganda tool up front for Mr. Obama. Another case of the government saying do as we say, not as we do. I wonder had we keep the death of Bin Laden secret how much the Intel gathered that night could have been used against al-Qaeda and their leadership. I believe Mr. Obama was a little to quick on the draw to release the information of his death to the general public.

The CIA worked extensively - and preferentially - with the crew of the upcoming movie "Zero Dark Thirty" according to just-released documents obtained by Judicial Watch.

The results? The filmmakers were able to "deep dive" into classified material in order to tell the story of the successful hunt for Osama bin Laden "first" with the direct permission of Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.

The new documents show "Zero Dark Thirty" director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal had plenty of help from the Obama administration which sought a propaganda tool for the vital 2012 elections.

According to e-mail exchange on June 7, 2011, CIA spokesperson Marie E. Harf openly discussed providing preferential treatment to the Boal/Bigelow project over others related to the bin Laden killing: “I know we don’t pick favorites but it makes sense to get behind a winning horse…Mark and Kathryn’s movie is going to be the first and the biggest. It’s got the most money behind it, and two Oscar winners on board…”

Our American Hero

Military commander of Gitmo, Jack Nickleson said " It's that simple"
" You obey orders or people die" I guess that says it all?

You mean...

You mean the actor Jack Nicholson? You really think he was a military commander of Gitmo? Hahahaha you did didn't you? At least learn to spell his name right.

Navy Seal Punishment Suggested by Panetta

I think that is the most rediculous thing I have ever heard of. How about we punish ALL politicians that write a book about their time in congress. I feel that you would be supressing his constitutional rights by saying he can't write a book about his life experiences, which is what this amounts to. Get a life Panetta! I think you people have much bigger problems than some service member that wrote a book.....

After the white house staff are indicted and convicted

Pannetta is another empty suit in the empty suit empty chair Obamanation. Where are the indictments for the white house leakers?

Another Politician's Duplicity

Leon's right...and I don't condone giving up sensitive classified information under any circumstances.

So...if in fact this SEAL did disclose classified material, we should prosecute him...right after we nail the senators and representatives and administration officials who have also done the same thing.

Just google Senator Hatch reveals classified information...then Senator Leahy "The leaker!"

I once held a TS clearance with caveats...imagine my surprise to hear a congressman reveal information that I knew to be TS (SCI) right after 9/11! These folks just can't wait to run and tell somebody to show how important and how much power they have to be let in on the secret.

A good number of politicians can't even get a clearance because of their previous history. (The SF-86 SSBI is designed to reveal who the liars are.)

Amen

Also...the disclosure forms one fills out when getting a security clearance are very clear. The fact is, if he HAS revealed classified information they would have already arrested him (or are building a specific case) and will do so imminently.

The fact DOD/Pentagon and the Obama administration are all a dither (more smoke than fire at this point) means likely the SEAL has just violated OPSEC which isn't necessarily a crime...he just may have embarrassed the Administration and they don't like that. Especially if he contradicted the liars (oops, I meant leakers).

I had to sign a non-disclosure agreement that lasts my lifetime, and says (I agreed to) that my family could be prosecuted if they revealed the information after I'm gone (assumes husband/wife pillow talk).

No, he should not be

No, he should not be punished. He did what the government doesn't have the nerve to do, be honest with those he protects. This man and many others risk their lives for us every day. Doing things they have nightmares about and they STILL DO IT. Why? They love their contry. They love their families. And I for one have alot of respect for all of them. God bless all who have served, are serving and will serve .

Agreed! Both the SEAL and

Agreed! Both the SEAL and Kevin Maurer should be held accountable.

Second that!

They should be held accountable. His greed may put the other Seals and their family members at risk. It wasn't difficult to find out who he really is so how difficult will it be to identify the rest of the team? I'm sure for the right price he'd give them up!

He is a disgrace to the Navy Seals and this Country.

Oh, Baloney. Fmr VP Cheney

Oh, Baloney. Fmr VP Cheney "outed" an active CIA operative after her husband criticized then Pres. Bush's Iraq policy. Why not "punishment" for him?

Author is not divulging....

Mr. Maurer is merely relating a story as was told to him. There is no crime committed if he does not have access to the information from the originator, doesn't not know its level of classification or even if it is classified, or has signed ND forms.

You don't know what you are talking about.

Goose vs. gander

Whatever punishment, if any, they deem to bestow on this hero should also go to Obama and the rest of the Admin insiders who leaked classified Info to bolster their political standing.

re: punish

If he revealed anything that would put others in harms way, he should be held accountable. However, two days after the killing of Osama Bin Laden, Vice-President Biden told on the National News that is was Seal Team 6. That instantly put them and their families in harms way. I think this administration leaked more information that has been harmful than this book. I don't see anyone holding them accountable.
