CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Carolina Beach Town Council is diving into a project to build a state of the art aquatics center.
Tuesday night the town council allocated $30,000 to survey a prospective site for the center next door to the current recreation center.
In total the proposed aquatic center is supposed to have a $750,000 price tag.
Residents surveyed by WWAY seemed split on the decision to build a pool with taxpayer dollars.
“I think it’s the one thing that we’re missing,” said Carolina Beach resident Van Coley. “We have nice beaches, the ocean, and we have the restaurants, and then we have a really nice year round rec center here so the pool would definitely be a great addition to that.”
“My whole thing is if you have free beach free sun and free water why do you need a pool? This is much better than any pool could ever be,” said Marlene Ritzman.
Carolina Beach council members plan to tour similar facilities in other coastal towns to get a better idea of what they want the building to look like.
According to Carolina Beach Town Manager Tim Owens the aquatic center will have many uses and at this time it appears it will be open year round.
