TOPSAIL ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — The small community of Topsail Island is stepping up in a big way to help raise money for the taxi cab driver beaten up by a passenger.

Charles Hawkesworth suffered severe facial injuries after the attack by Marine Gunnery Sgt. John Adam Kinosh caught on camera. To help with Hawkesworth’s medical bills, the community is hosting the Sand Band Bar Crawl this weekend.

Hunga Bunga Java is kicking off the event with coffee for participants and taking donations.

“This is a small community so everybody is close knit and when it effects one of ours, people just started getting together,” said Hunga Bunga Java Owner Kari Krywy.

More than a few thousand dollars has already been raised, donated from people all over the world. Folks can enjoy 10 different bars and live music from Sunday 2-8 p.m.

you dang right I’ll be there!!!! Still can not believe this happened to JR-he has driven my happy hiney all over this island more than once and has never ever been anything but polite and hard working. I’d love to spit in that marines face and have the pleasure of ripping the uniform from his un-deserving body!!!!!

on the Island, it appeared there was a good turn out.

Now, to ensure the proceeds are best used for the young man, the Island Taxi owner should confirm whether he has informed his workers compensation insurance company of the incident; allow the insurance company to determine whether the driver is a true independant contractor or an employee under NC statutes; and allow the insurance company to pay for medical expenses and lost income if the young man is an employee for workers compensation benefits.

I believe it will be proven he is an employee despite the position title of independant contractor.

Might be a good follow up question. For that matter, did the owner even have workers compensation insurance? Another relevant question.
