DURHAM, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina Central University administrators are requesting a criminal investigation over hazing allegations involving members of the school’s revered drum line.

Vice chancellor for student affairs Kevin Rome said Friday the university’s internal police department is investigating whether the alleged conduct violated state law. Academic officials at the historically black college located in Durham are conducting a separate probe for possible violations of the student code of conduct, which bars hazing.

Officials announced Thursday that all 36 members of the drum line, who are part of the band known as the Marching Sound Machine, had been suspended from performing during Saturday’s football game against cross-town rival Duke University.

Rome said he hopes to resolve the student conduct investigation sometime next week, though the criminal review could take longer.
