READ MORE: Legends tennis returns to Landfall this weekend

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW sports release) -- Professional tennis Hall-of-Famer and former Wimbledon champion Stan Smith headlines the “Landfall Legends of Tennis” on Sept. 21-23 at the Country Club of Landfall’s Tennis Center.

The three-day event is sponsored by BB&T and presented by Williams Mullen. It will benefit the UNCW Seahawk Club and the Miracle League.

Smith, who dominated the sport in the early 1970s, is scheduled to compete against returning legends Jimmy Arias, Luke Jensen, Bret Garnett, Mikael Pernfors and CCL Director of Tennis Charlie Owens. CCL’s ACE Tennis Academy juniors, UNCW players and local professionals will also take the court with the Legends participants in singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

Smith dominated tennis in the early 1970s and posted Grand Slam victories at the 1971 U.S. Open and 1972 Wimbledon. He won 39 singles and 61 doubles titles, climbing to No. 1 in the world, and was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 1976.

The event will fund student-athlete tennis scholarships at UNCW through the Seahawk Club and also generate funds for the Miracle League of Wilmington.

“The Landfall community plays a significant role in our tennis programs,” said Jimmy Bass, UNCW’s athletic director. “The support the Landfall community gives to our student-athletes through charitable giving provides tremendous opportunities for growth in the classroom and on the court. We’re extremely fortunate to have such a great community partner.”

The Miracle League is a group of individuals dedicated to building a handicap-accessible baseball field, park and playground for special needs children to play sports and have fun. Construction on a $1.2 million facility is under way at Ogden Park.

“The Miracle League of Wilmington is honored to be a part of this year’s Landfall Legends of Tennis,” said Pete Hexter, fundraising chairman. “This event will help support not only the baseball field and playground under construction, but help bring together additional community resources to give special needs children and their families a place for recreational fun.”

General admission tickets are $10. A Marquis Table for four, covering all three days of tennis, Saturday night’s Grand Slam party and drink tickets, is $520. Tickets may be purchased at Landfall Realty and Marquis Tables may be purchased by contacting the CCL Sports Center at 910-256-7625.
