WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — WWAY has learned that New Hanover County has terminated Parks, Gardens and Senior Resources Director Jim McDaniel. County spokesman Charles Smith confirmed McDaniel’s termination.

When reached this afternoon, McDaniel said the county offered him terms this morning that he did not accept, at which point he was terminated. McDaniel said he could not say more about what happened, because he has retained an attorney and plans to appeal his termination.

I worked under Jim McDaniel at Callaway Gardens and continue to maintain a professional relationship with him. He was a driven, visionary leader who succeeded by enabling his employees to excel. A problem solver with a positive attitude who had high expectations of his employees. But who also recognized the contribution of said employees and frequently emphasized the work of the employees over his own achievements. He was also a champion of the underdog.

He could also be challenging to those who did not live up to his expectations. This seemed to be coming from challenging them to live up to their potential, and he demanded top performance.

Ive known Jim for many years and I think these negative comments must be coming from people who didn’t want to hold themselves to the high standard Jim set for them. The negative descriptions here sound nothing like the person I know.

Congratulations, New Hanover County. You just fired one of the few people in town with the vision to see this county into the next decade and beyond.

Please use your tools and get records of all emails sent by Jim McDaniel in the past 5 years. Then you will see what kind of manager he is…

This is a great loss. Jim McDaniel has done a great job.

  • John says:

Its about time. This guy is incompetent and very unprofessional. He treats his staff like children and is clueless about how his department functions. Maybe his replacement will see the incompetence at other levels and make some needed changes…

This would be a GREAT investigative series for you to look into! Why did so many people with a great track record leave after he started? What did he accuse people of doing to throw the light off of him? Where has all the money gone? How many people are owed a public apology by the county by hiding his malicious deeds? Would be nice for the people of this county to see. Do you have what it takes to dig up the dirt?

Somewhere out there Neal Lewis is smiling :)

  • Sammy says:

Good riddance to a department head who treated his people like crap. If you complained to HR about him you were shuffled off to another department, they let him make you so miserable that you quit or they just fired you.

A tip for a good investigative reporter – look back through his early salary history – you may just find a mysterious drop in his salary – see what you can pull from that.
