WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It was a special Friday night for the Laney Buccaneers. Not only was it the school’s homecoming game against undefeated Hoggard, but the class of 1982 celebrated 30 years since graduation.
Organizer Carl Davis says the reunion has been six months in the making. He’s happy to see so many familiar faces.
“I’m impressed to see so many show up,” Davis said.
Davis says it’s interesting to see how the city and school have both grown over the last 30 years. He also walked the halls with Michael Jordan (Laney Class of ’81), who classmates knew as “Mike,” a guy with some serious round ball skills.
And of course, it’s not a reunion, unless the class clown makes an appearance.
“What’s up guys? The cheap seats. Yeah, that’s good,” Lance Morrison said to the crowd.
Alice Lawrence now lives in Raleigh but wouldn’t miss an opportunity to reconnect with old friends.
“I love it, ’cause I’m coming home. This is a true homecoming,” Lawrence said.
And of course, the Buccaneers from years past are still standing behind the ole blue and gold to be tonight’s champs.
“We have it in us to win. We are the Laney Buccaneers,” 1982 grad Panza McNeill said.
