WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The controversy continues with New Hanover County Commissioners in their search to fill former Chairman Ted Davis’s seat.

Last week commissioners ran into a roadblock in deciding whether to pick up Melissa Gott to act as their temporary fifth board member. But now, one commissioner says Gott has got to go.

“With me having questions in my mind as an elected official, I’m not going to put someone on our board that I have questions with,” says board chairman Jonathan Barfield.

The county's Republican party nominated Gott, but after a complaint surfaced questioning whether Gott lives in New Hanover or Brunswick County, commissioners decided to wait.

GOP Chairwoman Rhonda Amoroso says it was all part of a smear campaign against Gott.

“I think what has happened is a witch-hunt and I think there's a double standard and it looks like a war on women to me,” Amoroso says. “As a woman, I am quite offended by it.”

Commissioners unanimously decided to hand over the issue to the GOP and county board of elections. Tuesday, the party turned over a packet containing affidavits and documents proving Gott does live at her address in New Hanover County. However, Barfield says that's not enough to sway his opinion.

“There was no need for me to look through it,” Barfield says. “I mean I’ve gotten more emails from citizens who live in that area saying listen we haven't seen any kids in this home. At night, the lights are out, the whole nine yards. “

Amoroso says she hopes Barfield reconsiders and takes the time to read the packet.

“That’s disturbing to me and very disappointing,” she says. “We spent hours putting that packet together.”

Commissioner Rick Catlin says he plans to thoroughly look over the GOP’s packet on Gott before making any decision. WWAY also reached out to both commissioners Jason Thompson and Brian Berger in reaction to the packet and Barfield’s stance. Neither has returned our calls.

I can't wait till the

I can't wait till the Republican sweep in November.

You might want to try plan B

You might want to try plan B Rhonda, your "war on women" comment didn't quite work out for you like you thought it would, did it?

Ashamed to live in ILM

Seems we have just another Republican who believes they are the entitled ones-- entitled to live in a house finer than what they can afford in NH county while using NH county benefits, entitled to prechoool in NH county while not being domiciled there and cutting preschools for poor children, and entitled to employ a nanny of another nationality while fighting the rights of others to immigrate. Has she paid social security taxes for this nanny? Doubt it. You all miss the bigger point. She is most likely maintaining the dual residences so she or her spouse can be appointed to high profile positions and then later run for office in Brunswick county on that trite outsider Republican platform of cleaning up all us country folk. It's been done before. When it happens, remember the lies."

Southern Child, you do know that Ms. Gott is Latina, don't you? Guess not or you would'nt make such STUPID statements. The ignorance and stupidity of some of these comments on this site is amazing.

REALLY

Coule it be that the BOYS are afraid this lady will not play their game...that is vote for everything they want not what is best for the community!! When is Jason going to be cochairman of something..bc it seems he and Barfield are always up to something. Shame on you for being afraid of a woman or maybe you were afraid of how the people would vote for her instead of YOU!

Resident

Maybe I am wrong but the issue is that she is either a resident or not of NHC. Da, this should not be too hard to find out. Where does she file her property taxes and if she does not own a residence, she does own a car, I hope. If she doesn't own anything I don't think she is qualified to be a commissioner since they are making decisions based on commercial and personal properties. These are public records so does she or doesn't she and if she has a boyfriend in Brunswick county who cares along as she is a resident and pays taxes in NHC. Now if she moves to brunswick county she should not be qualified. Cut and dry peoples.

This has nothing to do with

This has nothing to do with what land she owns or where. In order for her to serve on the board, her primary residence would have to be within the borders of New Hanover County.

If I read

correctly, she and her husband own approximately 30 properties in both counties and the city.

Not unusual for investors to pick up distressed properties.

The challenge seems to be her residence. Where does she live and where has she lived.

No doubt, she can show property tax receipts for either county and the City.

Now the concern should be this. Did she, an attorney, know the law? If she did, and was not residing where she should have been, then she has a much bigger problem.

Was she attempting to commit fraud? And can that impact her law license? For that matter, could it also affect her husband's as well?

Tom-

Interesting point about the attempt to commit fraud - the question is by whom? Gott? Or the GOP ?
I believe LaNassa should also inquire with the State Bar about this.

If Gott gets word of the potential impact on her ability to continue practicing law and withdraws then we'll know that she is in fact residing in Brunswick county.
Then we should inquire as to where here kids go to school and why.

My thought is why? Why would she even consider trying to get a county seat if in fact this could lead to the embarrassment outlined above?
Get your kids yanked out of school for not being a resident? I don't have an issue with Brunswick county schools - I believe they are just as good as NH County schools are, so if you're living in Brunswick - why transport your kids here?

This seems to be a failure of the PARENTS who are putting political gains before their kids and their careers.

If she IS a resident? And it can be proven? Hey more power to her - but she's got to be vetted FIRST. The "collateral damage" this could cause to the local GOP is immeasurable. Look its a PUBLIC office - you're gonna get screened - it's not a witch hunt

Barfield knows a lot more than he's letting on - perhaps this is his way of saying to Gott - "This could get ugly because we know where you live". If this is true he just gave her an out.

Nominate someone else - what the hecks the problem?

No More Controversy PLEASE!!

The last thing our county commission needs is MORE controversy! Please, can we just find someone reputable so they can get on with the important business of fixing the many problems our county is facing. For Amorosa to suggest this is a "war on women" is absurd. I for one would love to see women on our board, but we already have one ineffectual sitting board member in the headlines regularly. What we desperately need is a competent and controversial-free choice and Gott is not that! What are you thinking Republicans??? There are so many better choices out there - please find one and move on.

No more controversy

Excellent post.
Hopefully our Board of Commissioners will ask for a new candidate or wait until the election and allow the voters to decide.
At the Oct.5th meeting Ms. Gott was asked if she and her husband resided together and she answered in the affirmative. Interesting how one can vote in Brunswick County and the other in New Hanover County but yet live together.

A "War on Women"??

That is, almost, as disgusting as someone playing the race card after all other arguments have failed.

Wilmington Observer

immediately playing the "sex card" doesn't help you case...

Rhonda.

GOP Chairwoman Rhonda

GOP Chairwoman Rhonda Amoroso says it was all part of a smear campaign against Gott.

“I think what has happened is a witch-hunt and I think there's a double standard and it looks like a war on women to me,” Amoroso says. “As a woman, I am quite offended by it.”

smear
witch-hunt
double standard
war on woman
quite offended

What a load of nonsense. As a woman let me say this: Valid concerns about where Mrs. Gott lives have NOTHING to do with the words that Ms. Amoroso is using to describe this situation. Nothing. I want to know where she lives. If her children live in Brunswick County, I want Mrs. Gott to reimburse NHCS for their education. I am offended by the kind of defense that Ms. Amoroso is mounting. I would prefer proof of residence instead of a barrage of inflammatory words. Ms. Amoroso is so off topic that I question her motives.

Ms. Gott knows that as an

Ms. Gott knows that as an attorney her duty is to avoid even the appearance of impropriety. Instead, she is digging quite a deep hole for herself because not only is her residency in question, but the presence of her children in New Hanover schools is now called into question. I think she and Ms. Amoroso should realize that this failure to properly vet all issues before stepping into the bright light of public service is nop one's fault but their own. Mr. Barfield happens to be correct on this one.

Wow

If she is in fact sending her kids to NH County schools that is disturbing.
Look I know that as a business they are paying property taxes to NH County and the city of Wilmington and I can appreciate the argument that they should be able to take advantage of all the NH County has to offer.
However, lets separate the business from the family as each has its own identity (and NO - businesses are not people too)
What we have here is someone looking to get all they can from wherever they can.
Show your support to Brunswick county Ms Gott. You live there - send your kids to school there. If you want NH County schools then move here.
This is beginning to leave a very biter taste in my mouth for all things GOP (on the local level).

If she can't play by the

If she can't play by the rules, the she has no business being a county commissioner. When we bought our house, we made sure of the school district before we made our decision. It really isn't hard to do. If we cannot trust her to be forthright with her personal business then how can she be trusted with the taxpayers' business?

Really?

You sound like you trust the people already in office with your tax monies. Really?

"A war on women?" Here we

"A war on women?" Here we go.

Common sense

Ok enough's enough.
The law office LOOKS like a house but is clearly not occupied by residents it's occupied by a business.
They have a "home" in Brunswick County - a place they should be proud to raise their children in.
This is NOT a bad thing but unfortunately there are certain rules regarding residency for "nominated" or elected officials.
This is not some witch hunt and it's certainly not some effort to disparage women.
Its all about where you live and you certainly don't live in that office location.

Where are all the grown ups in this situation? This sound like a big bunch of children - "She lives there". "Oh no she doesn't" . "Does too, does too".
Just nominate another GOP person who actually lives in NH County - it's not like she's the last one available.
Good grief

Vog

As usual, I agree with you.

As usual, I agree with you. I think one way to check out which one is the primary residence is to check her utility bills. The house she lives in will have higher electricity and water bills. I imagine it can't be that hard to figure out.

Hey, WWAY..

Since you've already proven with Berger that you're not beneath stalking somebody to find out where they are living, why not just stalk this woman, too? How hard could it be?

Two questions

“I think what has happened is a witch-hunt and I think there's a double standard and it looks like a war on women to me,” Amoroso says. “As a woman, I am quite offended by it.”

Can I get a show of hands of those of you who think Amoroso is as loose a cannon on deck at the NHCRC as Berger is?

AND

I fully understand Miss Gott's intentions..........I own what I consider to be a very nice house with 4 bedrooms and 3 baths but I choose to pitch a tent in the back yard and stay there.

You reckon I could get Miss Amoroso to put a good word in for me for the planning board seat Gott's vacating?

Good ol boys, Thompson, Berger, Barfield

Appalling that these won't even consider looking at the records requested. This sounds like gender and racist bias to me bc Melissa is a Latina. Why should it matter where her husband lives? Maybe they are separates and she does not feel comfortable airing out that info publicly. Berger/hickey/ Thompson should be ashamed of themselves for fabricating this nonsense to further their own self interest at the expense of this young ladies reputation. They clearly don't want Melissa at all costs because she will not play by their rules. Everyone in the professional and political community knows that Melissa lives on Chestnut. Barfield even turned down two offers to have dinner at her house and he said "it wouldn't change anything". Time to clean the good al boys out ie Barfield and Hickey NOW, Jason Thompson in December, and Berger in two years.

Seriously

Are you kidding me? Melissa gott works with the good ole boys. she is affiliated with that crowd. Hickey and Berger are not good ole boys. That is why the establishment hates them....well at least why they hate hickey.

Face it. You are going to tell me she lives in a 4 bedroom house with 1 bathroom which is shared between her, her kids, and her clients She has a 5000 sqft house in a gated community but she decides to live in her law office instead? The GOP didnt do their homework and they lost

If Hickey gets Davis' seat

If
1) Berger, Jason, and Barfield vote for Hickey to get Davis' seat, and 2) then Hickey, Berger, and Barfield vote for Jason to get Catlin's remaining 2 years, and then
3) they all vote for Barfield to keep his beloved Chairmanship

then you'll know who is working with who and it'll stink to high heaven.

If Melissa gets that seat.

If Melissa gets that seat. She can then vote for the baseball stadium (which the gop chair wants), Covantis, and Titan (for her buddy Warwick). She is in the pockets of the good ole boys.

Thats a lot of ifs you have there. Sounds like a berger conspiracy theory.

Office employee

Gott does not live in that cramped little apartment over her office. Lots of people know that Blaine one of her employees has been living there.

Barfield needs to go

Barfield needs to go and will in his next election
