OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — It was a scary situation for police on Oak Island after spotting flames shooting from the roof of a house Monday night. After patrolling the area, an Oak Island police officer spotted heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of a home at 107 SE 69th Street.

No one was home when fire crews responded around 9:30 p.m. and quickly put out flames in the back of the home's attic. Firefighters sawed a hole in the front side of the attic to ventilate smoke and extinguish any hot spots.

Crews believe lightning caused the fire. They left the scene around 11 p.m.
