PITTSBORO, NC (AP) — Chatham County officials are investigating the death of a man who caught fire in a parking lot near a fishing pier.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported officials have not yet identified the remains of the man who died in the fire Saturday night.
Chief sheriff’s deputy Gary Blankenship says there is no indication of foul play. Investigators are trying to determine if the death was an accident.
Deputies were called by people who were fishing and said they saw a large flame and heard a scream coming from a parking lot. Blankenship says the witnesses tried to put the fire out but were unable to save the man.
No vehicle or person was seen leaving the area at the time.
