BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Compared to the recent presidential debate, the forum for Brunswick County Commission 5th District seat Wednesday night was calm and civil.

Democrat Michael Ballard faced off against Republican Frank Williams in a forum hosted by the Alliance of Property Owners Associations.

The potential commissioners were asked if they agree with the county decision to combine the Department of Social Services with the Health Department.

“Yes, I do agree with that, and I think it’s a very smart move on behalf of the county to bring both departments together,” Ballard said. “It would be cost effective. It would not be a burden on the tax payers. You have both services under one umbrella. It would be easy for seniors to get around and get needed services.”

“I have heard lots of people bending my ear on both sides of this argument, so I know it’s a controversial issue,” Williams said. “My general principal in government, regardless of these two departments, is consolidate where we can, and save money where we can.”
