WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Ivey Hayes was known for his amazing artwork, and to organizers of the 2012 Wilmington Arthritis Walk, he’s also known for his heroic spirit. They’ll the artist who died last month during Saturday’s walk to raise money and awareness about the disease.

There’s a misconception that only older folks get arthritis, but Hayes was diagnosed at a young age.

“Ivey was our adult honoree last year and just gave such a truly touching and inspiring speech and had such an inspiring attitude that we felt compelled to honor him as our grand marshal this year,” Arthritis Walk Chairman Claude Riley said. “As you know he recently passed, so this walk will be a tribute to him.”

The 2012 Wilmington Arthritis Walk is Saturday. It kicks off at 9 a.m. in Hugh MacRae Park.
