WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — You may have noticed construction at a halt lately at the site of a new hotel at 2nd and Grace Streets downtown.

After two weeks of a stand still, construction started back up on the Courtyard by Marriott this week, according to Graham Construction.

Project Manager Eugene Jackson says the two-week delay was due to issues with plumbing, storm drainage and getting the proper safety forms for construction.

Though it seems like not much has been accomplished, Jackson says most of work has been done underground, so there’s a lot that we don’t see.

“We’ve got $1.5 million in the ground that you can’t see, so we’ve got a lot of costs in the ground,” Jackson said. “We’ve got like 231pilings in the ground. It’s a lot.”

The hotel has been under construction for a little more than a year. Jackson says the project is running about 30 days behind schedule.

The entire structure should be finished by the end of the year, and jackson says the hotel is expected to be up and running by the end of March.

Am I really reading that this “structure will be completed by the end of the year?” This year, 2012? That seems impossible. I wish it were true. I am sick and tired of part of Grace St. being blocked off and rarely do I ever see anyone working on the site. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for more hotels downtown, but this is ridiculous. I am sure it is not the property owners fault, or the contractors fault, but most likely the great City of Wilmington, and their team of bureaucrats fault. I feel for the hotel owner, and I feel for the surrounding business.
