PPD honors 'heroes' running Beach2Battleship

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- PPD launched events in celebration of its 5th annual Beach2Battleship Triathlon this weekend at its headquarters downtown. During the ceremony, race participants who have battled and overcome illnesses because of clinical trials were honored.

One of PPD's heroes says staying active and participating in clinical trials saved her life.

"We're out here because of clinical trials," Emily Schaller said. "Most of us heroes wouldn't be alive it weren't for clinical trials. That's the hope part of it, but the community needs to be aware of it. There are so many trials going on."

Schaller, who is living with cystic fibrosis, says the work that PPD is doing helps save the lives of people across the country. She also says she is excited to participate in the race this weekend.
