WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s the first day of One Stop Voting, but do you know who your Congressman is? Redistricting may mean new candidates for many people in the Cape Fear.

The newly drawn Congressional districts mean part of Wilmington and much of Pender County are now a part of US House District 3.

Incumbent Republican Walter Jones and Democrat Erik Anderson are fighting to represent the newly drawn district. It includes 22 counties from the Virginia line all the way to Wilmington.

Anderson says he thinks the region needs a change, because Jones has been in office for nearly two decades and has brought about little change.

“This is what we get from Congressman Jones,” Anderson said. “We just do not see Congressman Jones any more. Actually we haven’t seen him for the past 18 years. He’s been pretty much absent when it comes to actually spending time in the district and talking amongst the people and helping us grow as a community.”

Jones says Anderson has no idea of his schedule and how much time he spends in the district.

“I’ve been all over the district,” Rep. Jones said. “In the last three months, I’ve been to New Hanover County twice. I can assure my opponent that there’s not anyone in the United States that does any more to get home and be with his people than Walter Jones.”

If Jones wins, it would be his tenth term in Congress. Anderson says he hopes voters will take advantage of the fact that jones has an opponent, because he says this is the first time he has had any opposition in years.

Jones says he has plans to spend more time in New Hanover County if he is reelected in November. Anderson says he would not count on that.

Why didn’t the New Hanover County Board of Elections send out a notice of the change to all voters that were affected; similar to the notices sent out in 2010 whose NC House district changed. The local NHC Board seems to be a guilty party in all the confusion.

and Im not sure I can support Walter Jones. Ive written 2X to his office and yet to get a response even a canned email reply. Its become painfully aware to me Jones could careless about his constituents in NHC contrary to his comments. He knows generally the area here in NHC is highly Democratically tilted which he now represents (downtown areas as well as around UNCW and the local housing area outside campus). It pains me but Im not a puppet so I will likely be voting for Anderson the challenger (I know it wont change the control of the house to the Dems). Id like to know where Mr Jones went when he was in NHC. I havent seen one single campaign sign for either of them and even saw a campaign sign for McIntyre on Racine which is 3rd District now.
