CALABASH, NC (WWAY) — A major fire in Brunswick County Monday night had crews working for hours to put out the flames.

The Calabash Fire Department was alerted around 10 p.m. Monday about a fully involved fire at Beck’s restaurant in Calabash. When crews arrived, they found flames shooting out of the back side of the building. Several departments responded and worked for more than two hours to contain the fire and extinguish all hot spots. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The building is believed to be a total loss. Parts of River Road were shut down.

Spokeswoman for the Calabash Fire Department, Honey Shore, says once crews can get inside the building, a cause can be determined.

I was shocked to hear about the fire in Calabash. I have a place at Ocean Isle and Beck’s is my favorite Calabash seafood restaurant. I wish you guys the best of luck rebuilding, your restaurant has always been tops in food and service. My mom and grandmother were just in the night before this happened.

Years ago, it was one of the best in town but went there recently and the service was terrible and the seafood was sopping in grease!

My uncle who lives in Wilmington told me by email yesterday about Beck’s fire. I was truly sorry to learn of this. Every year for the past 22, my family travels from Atlanta to Ocean Isle for a week at the beach. We always try different restaraunts and this past summer went to Becks, not having been there in a number of years. There were about 10 of us and after our meal we all talked about how good it was and that the service was great. We definately planned to go back there. I live 385 miles away but look forward to another visit.Good luck on your rebuilding.

by your post.

There was one negative post concerning food. Agreeably, it was in poor taste; if they had a problem with your food service, they should have approached you or the Health Department.

But you did have insurance, correct? The proper insurance would pay the costs to remove debris; rebuild to current codes; replace contents including inventory; loss of earnings; and even wages for employees.

I hope your agent was out there the next day; initiated the claims process; and you’re already seeing some progress begin.

I feel much sympathy for the family and employees. I live in Little River and always bring my guests there. A sad day for all in the area. We need to help each other in time of grief and sorrow. Some people made some poor statements regarding the food and owners. They need to examine their own lives and situations. Trust in God for help and to move forward.

I am from Chicago and we have a family home in NMB.

We are here for Thanksgiving and went to Calabash last night for our regular feast at Beck’s. We have been regulars for 30-plus years.

We were so sorry to see what happened to you. The food and service was always so excellent. I hope you are holding up.

Please start it up again. Beck’s seafood was always the highlight of our visits.

Wow. I’m appalled at the audacity of some people. I stood among family and friends last night watching MY livelihood go up in flames all I could think about was all the blood, sweat and tears that my family and I have out into that restaurant. My children are in that restaurant more than they are at home. Seriously people- have respect for others. We are grieving the loss of not just a building but a family legacy that is irreplacable to us. This is how I feed my children and support my family. A little class goes a long way. If you had a bad dining experience, I deeply apologize and wish I had been made aware of it when you were there and I would have and could have done everything I could have done to make things right for you. How tasteless of you to get on this website and “critique” our food, service or morals at a time like this. I’m so thankful our friends, employees, customers and fellow business owners have shown us support through this tragedy.

We are sad hear this. We have been going to Beck’s for lunch on the third friday of September every year for our “friends of Casey” golfing outting for over 10years. We love this place and the staff has always been great every year. We come from many states of the US and now our friday tradition will have to change at least until it is rebuilt. To all my golfing buddies, can not wait to order shrimp and shrimp again.

I am sorry for your loss. We came to Calabashfrom Holden Beach for dinner and were so sorry to see the timbers of your family restaurant. I ate at your restaurant many times, including on my honeymoon in 1959 with the Joe Hoffman family from Tilghman Beach. Thinking of you all.
