WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police are working to raise awareness about marked crosswalks. Traffic units are cracking down on drivers not yielding to pedestrians at the crossings.

Officers were assigned to some of the most problematic crosswalk intersections. South 3rd and Ann streets downtown is one of the most dangerous, along with 17th Street and Medical Center Drive.

“If a pedestrian’s in a crosswalk, then all traffic has to stop in both directions, not just in that particular lane, but in all the lanes, so the pedestrian has a clear path all the way across the street,” Sgt. Mike Donelson said.

Officers also want pedestrians to make sure they yield to traffic before they step into any intersection or crosswalk.

Thank you, WPD. If we want people to walk, it has to be safe. If we want Wilmington drivers to improve, the police have to stop them from breaking the law. Stopping for a crosswalk is no big deal, until it’s your mama or your child about to get run over. There is no glory in this task, but at least one person here appreciates you for showing up and doing your thing, WPD. Let’s roll.

Actually, if you read the article you will find that they are not cracking down on the pedestrians. They are cracking down on the drivers who do not yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. This is definitely a problem with potential fatalities, so yes, it is an important thing for them to do.

Your an idiot!First all if you read the article they werent talking about people jaywalking, they were talking about drivers not giving people the right of way that are triing to cross the road. Its plain to see your one of the ones that are never satisfied no matter what the police are doing to make things better. You would probly feel more at home on craiglist in the rant and rave section, alot of your type hang there.

From the story: “Officers also want pedestrians to make sure they yield to traffic before they step into any intersection or crosswalk.”

The police are also watching to make sure the pedestrians are not stepping out in front of vehicles.

Hey! Maybe some day we will read an article here where it states that the WPD have starting cracking down on “Bad Drivers”. Yes…just plain ole bad drivers that have brought us to the #2 Award winning slot in N.C. (again) for dangerous and wreckless driving.
Hey Chief of Pole Lease…here’s another assignment fer Ya!
    As Follows:
Hit the streets and target the creators of those “#2 Award Winners” that earned us the Blue Ribbon the Mayor hangs on his wall in his office…framed statistics that is.
Go Get ‘Em…you know…the drivers that run Red lights/Stop Signs/Don’t Signal/Speed/Cross lanes quickly to make their Goof Ball turn/No license/Insurance (License checks will reveal that)…on and on and on>>>
Welcome folks to…”Pop Goes the Weasel,NC” or “PGW,NC) Alias Wilmington,NC
    {We are #2….State Wide}

At different times WPD sets up as construction workers, utility workers, grass mowers, homeless people and santa to RADAR vehicles and tickets are issued. Then the public will fuss that it is dirty, sneaky or underhanded and they shouldn’t be allowed to do that.

    The police can’t please everybody.

  • GKirk28405 says:

What they need to concentrate on are the idiots that just walk out from behind parked cars or walk into traffic with out looking where they are going. Until, of course, the sound of my horn stops them.

  • Non-Stick Surface says:

Having solved all other problems in Wilmington we can now focus on the heinous act of JAYWALKING! I feel safer now.

  • Wade Griffis says:

If you believe that crosswalks will protect you in this town- send me a message. I will send condolonces to your next of kin.

  • GuestWalker says:

We have crosswalks in Wilmington? Where? Stop kidding!

  • Office Fan says:

Thanks to the WPD for stepping up efforts to catch drivers flying through crosswalks. I work at PPD and not a day goes by when I don’t have a close call with a CFCC student flying down Front Street at 30 or 40 MPH and coming within inches of hitting me and other employees. They act like they either don’t even see us or couldn’t care less that someone is crossing the road, as long as they don’t have to slow down.
