CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A YouTube video circulating around town shows a man who appears to be intoxicated falling into a band.

The video was shot at Harbor Masters restaurant during the Beach Kids Reunion in Carolina Beach on Labor Day weekend.

A person at the event that night tells us the intoxicated man was Carolina Beach Mayor Ray Rothrock. She says the mayor was drinking what appeared to be liquor, heavily before stumbling into members of the band.

Town Councilman Bob Lewis says it seems the mayor was just caught at a bad moment.

"We are elected officials, but we are people and residents just like everyone else,” Lewis said. “We enjoy going out in the community just like everybody else would. I’m not judgmental. I think Ray used to be a boat captain, and if this happened when he was a captain, it wouldn’t even be newsworthy."

WWAY contacted Mayor Rothrock. He said he did not want to comment on the video.

Stumbling, bumbling drunks are nothing new to this town. We pride ourselves on a lack of decorum and self discipline. By the way, anyone who thinks it okay to be this intoxicated in public or anywhere else for that matter is just plain brain dead. This man is the main representative of our town, not to mention “old enough” to know better. The behavior smacks of a drinking problem. Unfortunately, drunk and stumbling is a popular way to spend time down here in woeful CB. Our dirty little secret. An island awash in booze and bad judgement.

People have no idea how serious it can be when ONE person stumbles! Look at how many people “almost” got injured! Wow, with you being THERE and seeing everything that happened up close and personal, it must have been a terrifying experience for you. You are so lucky you didn’t get “almost” injured too! I bet you’re still having nightmares about how many people “almost” got injured!

I “almost” got injured once. I “almost” had to seek out professional counseling to get over the horror of it all.

It is one thing to party and have a good time responsibly, but there is no excuse for this behavior from anyone. I WAS THERE and saw everything that happened up close and personal. People who were almost injured included my wife, a friend, the male singer of the band, and a couple of other restaurant patrons. Equipment was plowed into and knocked over, there was some minor equipment damage, and some electronics had to be re-set in order for the band to finish playing. I don’t care who the man was, but he was very large, the place was packed, and he could have caused a lot of damage if he had not been taken away and controlled by someone.

There was really no valid reason for anyone to post that video in the first place. You can find an incident like that, and much worse, 10 times on any night, at any beach bar. People just have nothing better to do than gossip and smear others with their spare time and their cell phones. It also appears that WWAY can’t seem to identify newsworthy events and stoop to the same level. Par for the course though…hope you all got your jollies for the day!

It is sad that people cannot have “a good time” without getting plastered out of their minds with alcohol.

Sounds like you’re still ticked off about that DUI you must have gotten in CB.

Labor day weekend at the beach, a great band and a man in a bar right on the waterway overindulging. So what? Worst case perhaps, a little embarassing personally. Oh well. That’s nobody’s business but his own (that’s directed to WWAY as well).

There is no mention ANYWHERE of his attempting to drive or even having his car at that location. Somehow, from that total lack of ANY evidence of wrongdoing, you think he should be arrested and his car should be towed?

Perhaps you should be arrested for driving while stupid. Apparently, that’s a permanent condition.

Well, it could be that the gentleman wasn’t driving, or for that matter even drunk.

just a reminder of the over policed areas and carolina beach is one of them……why was he not arrested and his car towed??? like the rest of us if he is like everbody else.

Way to get down with your constituents!!

Okay, he was on his own time and that is his business. My question is – did he drive himself or did someone else take him home? If he drove, that makes it our business

I want to party with Ray.

Let a player play.

Shame on this man, any man, who thinks it is ok to pound back some liquor and stumble across the floor in a public facility. As a leader of the CB community, it has long been ok for mayors to do stupid things w/out reprimand. If this was my community, I would kick his butt to the curb simply because he is an extension of the town. Here’s to you Ray, the latest town drunk of CB:)

Seriously… He’s just tryin’ to have a good time like everyone else. Yes- he is an elected official and is held to higher standards. But, he wasn’t hurting anyone (other than his ego) and he is more than entitled to have a couple drinks and make a fool of himself at a concert just like everyone else. HARDLY NEWS WWAY! You continue to disappoint with your choice of intrinsic news value.
