LELAND, NC (WWAY) — In Brunswick County, one lucky principal got quite the surprise in the hall of her own school today.

Retha Rusk, principal at Lincoln Elementary in Leland, is the Principal of the Year in Brunswick County, and it’s safe to say she was unaware of the big news.

Community members and co-workers surprised her with a banner and flowers, thanking her for her hard work.

“I’m thankful that I’ve had the opportunity to work in the Brunswick County Schools, to be with children,” Rusk said. “My goal is to help schools become better, and to be a great learning environment for the children.”

Rusk says it’s a wonderful feeling that her peers have such confidence in her to nominate her for the award.
