BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — In Brunswick County, there were reports of sheriff’s deputies stationed inside of polling places. Some say that could lead to voter intimidation.

County Board of Elections Chair Willie Sloan told WWAY after he received complaints from several polling locations, he told County Elections Director Greg Bellamy to remove the deputies. Bellamy told WWAY that deputies were not placed inside polling locations, but at times may have passed through the area.

Bellamy says the deputies were requested to handle traffic issues and that the voting process has been smooth today.

What a great way to serve subpoenas! Let them come to you!

  • Liz says:

It is 2012 and truly sad to see that some things have not changed. It’s disheartening to see that a race between a Democrat and Republican, two men, are causing this type of hatred to rear it’s ugly head. The black and white thing. It’s sad and I hope not, that people put gas in their car, went to the poll and voted for the white guy or the black guy. Well, I guess in the end, we shall reap what we sow, out of our mouths, we will reap.

  • Joy says:

If you are scared of the police, might be because you are guilty of something. They don’t intimidate innocent people.

  • Wilmington Observer says:

If the sight of a law enforcement officer at a poling location intimidates you, it is time for you to go home and grow some more skin. If you bow to this type of complaint and have the officers leave, you need to go home and find a new job. I am absolutely sick and tired of officials (governmental or private sector) responding in a “knee jerk” fassion when some thin skinned, cry baby makes a baseless complaint.

I can only think of 1 reason why anyone would be intimidated by the presence of LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS. Unless your photo accompanied by your name and a list of the crimes you’ve committed appears on wanted posters in such great quantities that any officer/deputy would instantly recognize you, you have nothing to worry about.

To the idiots who complained…paranoid much? Time to go back on your meds before you once again start eating crayons and licking windows.

  • Alyson says:

Really? It never ceases to amaze me what people will complain about. Glad I am not that bored!

  • wth says:

Why would you complain about a deputy being at a polling place? and how does it intimidate voters?? If you are doubting your vote that badly, you probably should have voted the other way!! People amaze me

  • Guest12 says:

Please, read the report again. It says : “Inside polling areas”. Nobody would have a problem with deputies outside, but why have one wondering around inside the room where people are voting? I don’t want anyone looking over my shoulder while I vote.

  • Guest112212 says:

Did you think maybe they were there to vote?? You know they have that right!!

  • Guest000000 says:

Then they should vote on their own time like the rest of us.

  • Guest757 says:

People have complained about the police outside of the polling places. But the black panthers are ok..
    Talk about intimidation….

What a crazy world we live in now…

  • Guest000000 says:

…because there are so many Black Panthers outside of Brunswick County Polling places. I don’t recall anywhere in the article where it stated there were Black Panthers outside of voting areas in Brunswick County. Get your head out of Fox News.

  • bob says:

The voting station at 74/76 and 87 has two sitting outside in the parking lot

  • susank says:

How is a sheriff deputy’s presence intimidating? I found it very comforting to see them there, to PREVENT voter intimidation!

  • b. roberts says:

We very much appreciated the Deputy we had today at our Polling Place.

  • Guest2602 says:

I think having deputies present is completely ok. There was deputies at the Holden Beach poling site at the last major election due to the traffic chaos and that was soley the reason they were there. A deputy does not intimidate me in any way. And why would they order deputies to leave? That is crazy.

  • Guest John Difloure says:

Democrats are afraid the Deputies will scare away the illegals.

  • Guest757 says:

If they are complaining about the police being at polling centers maybe it’s because they have warrants out and are afraid of being recognized by the police.. Just saying >>>

  • diana1957 says:

    Now this is intimidation !!!!

In Philadelphia, the Black Panthers are currently standing outside polling booths, intimidating voters just like they did in 2008.

You’ll recall that in 2008, one member of the Black Panthers group was seen outside a Pennsylvania polling center, holding a billy club during the election four years ago. The group was later criminally prosecuted for voter intimidation, but the charges were later dropped by the Department of Justice.

Clearly for this election cycle, those criminal charges didn’t stop them from practicing the same activities. Fortunately, to help counter the Black Panther’s intimidation tactics, a group of former Navy Seals are set to also stand guard outside these polling centers, to make sure the Panthers don’t bother anyone on their way to vote.
