WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Just when you thought the elections were over, they’re not. The Congressional race between Democrat Rep. Mike McIntyre and Republican challenger David Rouzer is still too close to call.

Although McIntyre gave a victory speech last night, Rouzer said this race is not yet over.

When you look at the numbers, it is close: McIntyre with 50.08 percent of the vote. Rouzer with 49.92 percent. Just 507 votes separate the two in the race.

McIntyre carried New Hanover, Columbus and Bladen counties. Rouzer cleaned up in Brunswick, Pender and his home county of Johnston.

McIntyre’s camp says that’s enough. The eight-term incumbent is confident he has won a ninth term. In a statement, his campaign said:

“We are very grateful for the support the voters have shown. It was a close election, but Mike McIntyre has clearly received the most votes. Because it was close, the process will need to work itself out. We have confidence in this process, and Congressman McIntyre looks forward to representing southeast North Carolina for the next two years.”

But the Rouzer camp says not so fast. Rouzer will have to wait for the votes to be canvassed before he can ask for a recount. Rouzer’s campaign says there are many provisional and military ballots still outstanding, so they are waiting for all the votes to be in.

A Rouzer campaign spokeswoman says the vote canvass should be done by November 16. After that, Rouzer will decide where to go from there.

Of course, there is still the chance the canvass could turn up enough votes to give Rouzer the lead, which would then force McIntyre to decide if there will be a recount.

The Gerrymandering they did pulling voters out of the 7th district and putting them in the 3rd with Walter Jones did nothing to help and likely may have cost Rouzer the win against Mike the empty suit.
