COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The lives of two Columbus County families drastically changed Saturday night, but what could have been done differently to prevent the death of two children?

In the aftermath of Saturday’s horrible accident, investigators are left wondering if things would have been different if seat belts had been used.

Around 6:30 p.m. Saturday investigators say a SUV driven by Jesus Mondragon, 34, ran a stop sign at the intersection of NC 131 and Silver Spoon Road hitting the vehicle of 20-year-old Hannah Worley. Neither worley nor any of Mondragon’s four passengers were wearing a seat belt.

“Speed was not a factor. The vehicle didn’t stop, ran the stop sign at approximately 55 miles per hour and collided with the other vehicle that had the right of way on 131,” Highway Patrol Sgt. John M. Lewis said. “Out of the wreck there were two unrestrained children in the back of the vehicle that ran the stop sign, and they were ejected and died as the result of the collision.”

The two children killed were 11-year-old Samantha Mondragon and 2-year-old Ashley Mondragon. Investigators say their were lives were cut short by a series of bad decisions that highlight the importance of wearing a seat belt.

“Any time we have serious injuries or fatalities it’s very unfortunate, but to involve children is an absolute tragedy,” Sgt. Lewis said. “It’s the parent’s responsibility or their guardian or that person operating the vehicle to make sure that everyone is restrained. For children to be as innocent as they are, most just don’t know better. If they don’t practice it themselves, then these are the outcomes.”

Outcomes that affect all involved for the rest of their lives.

“It’s tough,” Sgt. Lewis said. “I know it’s tough on the families and all involved, but it’s also tough on our troopers. We see more than our share of tragedy, and it goes full circle the impact of these collisions.”

The investigation into the accident continues. Jesus Mondragon has not been charged for his role in the accident.

  • LLS says:

yes justice does need to be given to these two children who lost their lives in this horrible accident. i know that their father will wake up every morning knowing that what he did is the reason they are no longer here with him. there is no prison term or probation that will ever compare to the pain that he will feel in his heart. I pray that all of us who are being judgemental will take all that effort and put it in praying for him, his family and all who were involved in the accident. May God Bless You All!!!

I’ve observed that many in this area, including school personnel, don’t recognize the laws as they pertain to children being restrained and, of course, there are those who choose to ignore it even if they are aware. For starters, children are not supposed to be in the front seat until they are 12 years of age, and they are supposed to be restrained in the back seats. I’ve seen many, many instances of the front seat law being violated as well as the seatbelt law. I even watched a woman in a Suburban pull out of Wal-Mart with her toddler (couldn’t have been 2, w/ pacifier in mouth) standing up in the front seat, with the window down at that. The child appeared to be barely old enough to walk. It would not take much of a sudden movement to see her tragically injured or killed. If you want to ignore the law for your own safety that’s one thing, but if you ignore it when it comes to your children, it just goes to show that no matter what you say, you would NOT do anything in the world to protect your children. And by the way, in case you didn’t know this, people DO notice.

  • guest2014@ says:

Really??? He should feel bad! Who rides around in a car with their children unrestrained!?!?!?!

  • Charles Walters says:

It seems as if a couple of people who post on this site think I am to harsh when I say Jesus should not be shown any mercy for causing the deaths of two innocent children, and injuring another driver when he blew through a stop sign at 55mph. As you all know from the article neither of the girls was wearing a seatbelt. Many others agree it was totally his fault these children are dead, and another driver was seriously injured. As always there are some who will defend a person no matter what they did. A perfect example, other than this, are the fools who murdered the man delivering chinese food. This murder was planned, they placed the order then killed him for $45.00 worth of food. Yet there are people who are pissed because many say they should be put to death. It boggles my mind how many people think criminals should be given every advantage when their victims got no consideration for what was being done to them. The idiots who are critical of me for being harsh on people like this are just that IDIOTS!!!!!!! I’m sure others will agree with me about this.

  • Leilani says:

Ruth I know what you mean I think about her every day. I feel sad that she is not in sixth grade with us :(

  • Leilani says:

Some people just need to stop being so harsh like please stop writing all these harsh comments you make Jesus feel bad and I know because he lives near me okay PLEASE STOP BEING MEAN AND HARSH

  • 5-1-5-0 says:

It’s is nice to know that you were in the car and you know for a fact that he DID NOT make the children buckle up. So you should be charged as well. No one knows the situtation inside that car but the family and the good lord himself. I know for a fact I have secured my children numerous times to only discover they have unfastened themselves and never said a word. That includes a 3yr old in a booster. And I do live in the real world and deal with these scenes everyday. This father is paying for his mistake in the worst way imaginable, if in fact he made one. I am also a very good friend of the other family involved which have done nothing but extend their deepest sympathy to the Mondragon family. You should worry more on obeying Gods law…thou shall not judge!

  • Charles Walters says:

It seems as if others posting here agree with me in saying he should be locked up for not making sure these children were secure. Others also agree that blowing through stop sign at 55mph was no accident. Yes he is going to have to live with it, and he can live with it locked up in prison. So BITE ME!!!!

  • CoastalJade says:

He might as well pulled a gun and shot them in cold blood.
Seriously, to not buckle your children up in a vehicle?
I am literally sick at the thought of irresponsible and uncaring parents in this world.

  • Guest2020 says:

He didn’t just fail to stop. He didn’t even slow down, unless he was flying before. This isn’t just a matter of rolling through a stop sign. He was travelling at 55mph when he flew through the stop sign. This is more than mere negligence. This is absolute, intentional disregard for human life. Yes, he has a lot on his shoulders right now, but he only has himself to blame. He was driving recklessly with his children in the car. It was his job to keep them safe. He not failed to keep them safe he endangered their lives by the way he was driving. I have sympathy for their families. I have sympathy for the two children that he killed. Sorry, but I have no sympathy for the man that killed them.

  • Charles Walters says:

If you want to be critical of me have guts enough to put your name on it. To many people think these laws do not apply to them. Yes I am harsh about it, but how many dead drivers and passengers does it take before idiots start obeying the law. When a parent makes the choice to not buckle their children in, and they die in a crash then it is the same as a cold-blooded murder. It was not an accident the fool driving did not make the children buckle up, so in effect he killed them. From your asinine comments I can tell you do not live in the real world. Jesus blew through the stop sign, he did not make the children buckle up, so he is GUILTY, and you are stupid.

  • Leilani says:

It was not his fault okay you people can’t judge to early okay they are really hurt MAYBE GOD WANTED MY BEST FRIEND TO DIE FOR A RESON. So you can’t judge

  • Stacy Brooks says:

Did this guy have any love for his children or women witch ever .I love my daughter very much enough to know they belong in a car seat I could never move my car till she is strap when you say you love your kids do love them enough to make shure there safe no matter what.

  • Charles Walters says:

I read the article WWAY posted, are they wrong in saying be ran a stop sign at 55mph? That was no accident. I never said a word about him being legal or not. Many others have said the same thing as me. It was his fault, and his alone that these children are dead, and another person was seriously injured. As for being ignorant, DAMN!!! I feel sorry for any child that you had anything to do with, because they will turn out just as stupid as you.

  • Charles Walters says:

I honestly do not give a damn where he is from, it is still his fault these two children are dead. Lock his ass up and throw away the key. He made the choice not to make them buckle up, so make him pay for his choice. No mercy.

  • 5-1-5-0 says:

How high can you count Mr.Walters? Because I only counted 2 idiots other than yourself that has judged Mr. Mondragon. Freedom of speech is not for the ignorant…Walters! And yes ignorance is bliss, therefore you shall have a blissful life. Know the facts, have you spoken to him and ask did he not buckle the children? No of course not and really…BITE ME? My grandson could do better. And for the record I had rather be in this country with an illegal immigrant than an ignorant ass as yourself anyday. Remember the No mercy statement, I’m sure you will be hearing it very soon.

  • ldjones93 says:

I feel very sorry for the public safety and emergency response personnel who worked this scene. It’s very tragic for everyone involved.

  • Paul says:

    Seat Belts Can Save Lives

Thank you for reporting no one was wearing a seat belt. It’s so important that the public is reminded of how seat belts can save lives.

Mondragon’s negligence contributed to this tragedy. But this was not his only negligence. I predict an investigation will show that he had neither a driver’s licence nor insurance.

  • Guest28403 says:

If the driver had no license or what not it would have already been reported. I guess because his name is Jesus you assume (possibly correctly) he is Hispanic and therefore assume he is an illegal (maybe) but your racist assumptions are just that assumptions. For all you know he could be a hard worked citizen of the US born here. Somehow I doubt you will apologize for your racist comments when proven wrong. I do however feel he should face charges for felony child abuse due to the deaths of his daughters for failing to make sure they were restrained. (the 2 yr old wasnt even in her car seat it appears as required by law). A pass could be given on the 11yr old because she could have been belted and taken it off possible as kids are guilty of it but the 2yr olds death was completely on HIM.

  • HeAsksWhy says:

    Yo Paul,
Do you have first-hand knowledge of what you say regarding licensure and insurance? If so, prove it. If not, please do not pollute these boards with your redneck crap.

  • isidrosmujer says:

Those were my neices. Jesus is my brother n law and yes he does have a DL and Insurance on the SUV. He is a not illegal as he was born in Texas. He is a great father, he simply made a horrible mistake which sadly took two of his children. Yes the crash was his fault and it could have been prevented if he had paid closer attention to what he was doing and fastend the girls in, but i do not think that this should be about if he was legal or not. For anyone who is wondering, YES he is legal.

  • GuestJ says:

Paul, you are absolutely ignorant! Jesus is a US Citizen who does in fact have a drivers license and auto insurance! Way to go on being another jack ass who racial profiles! May those two angels rest in peace!

  • MegannereyesAkaUScitizen says:

Well, ide sayou are weong, jesus had full coverage insurance. And since jesus was born in houston texas he also carried a valid license. Racism is unnessecary.

  • Angela Munoz says:

Just so you know Paul, he has both. What a bunch of jerks on here.
This poor guy just lost his little girls due to his mistakes, but not only does he have to live with that for the rest of his life, he has to look their mother in the eye and see her pain too.
And all you uncompassionate jerks can do is talk about is if he had a license or insurance. Oh and just for the record he’s not illegal either he happens to have been born in the US. People make me laugh talking about people they have never met like they know them personally.
I guess hope for humanity might just really be gone after all.

  • caitanni says:

My oldest daughter broke both legs in a car wreck 7 yrs ago due to the step-mother not having her wear her seatbelt, my youngest daughter was not wearing hers (she stumped her big toe) and the stepmoms 1yr old was strapped into his carseat but the carseat was not seatbelted into the car. We were very lucky none of the kids died in the accident. Same situation, she ran a stop sign. I don’t understand why parents/ step-parents don’t take every measure possible to protect a child. Our vehicles don’t move until everyone is strapped in. Feel sorry for the parents, but they should of protected their kids. BUCKLE UP!!!

  • CoastalJade says:

The two children killed were 11-year-old Samantha Mondragon and 2-year-old Ashley Mondragon.

WHY was a 2 year old not in a car seat?
These children should have been strapped in with seat belts and that 2 year old strapped in a car seat that is strapped down with a seat belt.

  • Charles Walters says:

I hear comments from people all the time, who say “I’m not going to wear a damn seat belt, I don’t care what the law says.” These people are idiots, and the pain they feel is their own fault. They make the choice to not buckle up and not to make sure their children were safe, and not two innocent little girls are dead. I hope they put Jesus in prison for years, because he is responsible just the same as if he shot them in cold blood. There is no one else to blame, but this idiot for killing these girls, and hurting the driver of the other car. GUILTY!!!!!!

  • Guesttenheimer says:

Chas, you seem like such a nice, compassionate human being and your dear old dead mother is probably smiling at you right now! Bear in mind that if it was known that Jesus intentionally pulled out in front of another vehicle traveling at 55 mph, that would be considered murder! Making the mistake of neglecting to stop at a stop sign is negligence, but it wasn’t done with the intention of killing those two little girls. There is absolutely no relationship between this accident and someone shooting another in cold blood. You must spend an inordinate amount of time reading crap like “The Enquirer” and “California Detective”.

Don’t you think he has enough on his shoulders to live with as it is, or would you prefer he is tortured unmercifully for the remainder of his life here on earth?

Look around you Chas…notice all of the people that roll through stop signs and jump red lights…everyday? I see them and my guess is that you’re one of them that’s in way too big of a hurry!

  • B M says:

Seatbelts?? what a crock, SPEED was not a factor, running a stop sign at 55 mph sounds like a little speed was involved, doubt the guy even had a drivers license, there is getting to be to much of this happening.

  • Guest1971 says:

I feel terrible that this family had to learn a hard lesson in such a horrific way.

The two year old should have been in a carseat – probably in the rear facing position. If she had been properly restrained she would still be here today.

  • linda l. says:

yes, there should be justice for both of the children who lost their lives in the awful wreck. I also think that the father of these two children will have to wake up everyday knowing that what he done took two of the most precious things we can be given. I am sure that their is not any prison time or probation he can be given that will ever compare to the pain he will feel in his heart for this. I pray that all of us that are making judgemental comments about this will put all that effort into praying for him & his family and all who are involved in this accident. May God Bless You All!!!
