WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The United States are not so united tonight as rumors that history may repeat itself circulate. Petitions on the White House’s website suggest that citizens across the country are not happy with the way things in washington are going and want a major change.

Petitions to secede from the United States started popping up shortly after the election last week. Citizens from more than 20 states, including North Carolina, have filed petitions to secede from the union.

With more than 20,000 signatures in less than a week, the Tar Heel State’s petition is quickly approaching the 25,000 signatures required to get a response from the Obama Administration.

UNCW sociology professor Dr. Mike Adams says the movement may be a glimpse of what is to come.

“I don’t think that this particular petition drive is going to result in anything,” Adams said. “When people ask if I take this petition seriously, no I don’t. It’s a foretelling, though, of things that might be taking place later on.”

Adams says when the south seceded from the union more than 150 years ago, it took a while for traction to build.

Other people say the petitions are a joke and merely the response of sore losers.

“It’s funny because of the current situation and states wanting to secede from the union? Really? Why? Nobody has a good enough reason why,” Nicholas Oates of Wilmington said.

Others say the requests signify a larger problem in Washington.

“I think really the only thing that needs to be taken seriously is just the fact that there is some disenchantment with the process, and that everyone in Washington needs to learn how to work together,” Mark Kennedy of Wilmington said.

The Texas secession petition has nearly 80,000 signatures. The White House has not yet responded to the petition.

The Rightwing likes to call themselves patriots but as soon an election doesn’t go their way they act like kindergartners.

America, love it or leave it!

Please pack your guns and leave ! Good luck with that you right wing nut jobs. Pouting because of an election outcome again?

Admit it…..You all are scared of a little black man. Absolutely hysterical !

The President hasn’t divided anyone, YOU personally are responsible.

Notice when we have a “Repuke” president you don’t see “Liberals” trying to secede?

GROW UP and deal with it. Bunch of dang babies.

Kind of funny how people like you make the gregarious comments like this. When the people that provide your free stuff start talking about removing themselves from the money pot, it scares tha hell out of you doesn’t it?
Enjoy that gravy train! It’s coming to a positive stop soon! The working and productive portion of America is speaking and has had enough of the lazy, unproductive leeches of society!

I understand that both Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy carry copies. There have also been unsubstantiated reports that the Easter Bunny and several Leprechauns are in possession of copies as well.

Reading the comments above, its amazing to see the short sighted and simple comments the left wing liberals post. Do you really believe this is about black and white? Really? That has NEVER been an issue, and it has only been raised by liberals accusing others of being racist because they don’t or won’t follow the current president. Idiots.

This is about the destructive path that the current government is taking our country, the increasing debt, the weakening of our dollar, sinking investments, and “apologizing for being Americans”. Nothing about black and white.

  • Wilmington Observer says:

Why is it that when WWAY reports on something such as an “online petition” there is not a link to the petition? This is not the first time that the “Four W’s” we’re not covered in a WWAY report.

I think I’ll stay right here with my guns. Why don’t you move to a city where citizens aren’t allowed to have guns? I’m sure you’d feel more secure. That’s probably why you voted for Obama, right? A little security from the government? Also you called him black, I call him socialist. The libs are the ones that make it a race issue. I also like to way you call a republican a “Repuke” and then have the nerve to call someone else a baby. Status quo. Enjoy your day

  • NC gal says:

No, they ARE crazier up north but they’ve moving down here and then infiltrating our system with their complaints about the way we are down here and wanting to make it like it was up there! They should have stayed up there……

No, you had liberals saying they would leave the United States if Bush was re-elected. He was and they didn’t.

    The Confederacy of Takers
    by Dana Milbank (Washington Post)

President Obama’s opponents have unwittingly come up with a brilliant plan to avoid the “fiscal cliff.” They want to secede from the union.

If Obama were serious about being a good steward of the nation’s finances, he’d let them.

The White House, in one of those astro-turf efforts that make people feel warm about small-d democracy, launched a “We the People” program on its Web site last year, allowing Americans to petition their government for a redress of grievances. Any petition that receives 25,000 or more signatures within 30 days is promised a response (though not necessarily a favorable one) from the Obama administration.

And so a large number of patriotic Americans, mostly from states won by Mitt Romney last week, have petitioned the White House to let them secede. They should be careful about what they wish for. It would be excellent financial news for those of us left behind if Obama were to grant a number of the rebel states their wish “to withdraw from the United States and create [their] own NEW government” (the petitions emphasize “new” by capitalizing it).

Red states receive, on average, far more from the federal government in expenditures than they pay in taxes. The balance is the opposite in blue states. The secession petitions, therefore, give the opportunity to create what would be, in a fiscal sense, a far more perfect union.

Among those states with large numbers of petitioners asking out: Louisiana (more than 28,000 signatures at midday Tuesday), which gets about $1.45 in federal largess for every $1 it pays in taxes; Alabama (more than 20,000 signatures), which takes $1.71 for every $1 it puts in; South Carolina (26,000), which takes $1.38 for its dollar; and Missouri (22,000), which takes $1.29 for its dollar.

Since the effort gained attention this week, copycats in all but a few states have joined the petition drive. To be fair, White House officials could refuse the secession petitions of states Obama won, such as New York (which gets only 79 cents on its tax dollar), Michigan (85 cents) and Colorado (79 cents).

What would be left is a Confederacy of Takers, including relatively poor states such as Alaska, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi. One of the few would-be Confederacy members that pays more than it receives is Texas, which because of oil money is roughly break-even at 94 cents of benefits for its tax dollar. (The statistics, from an analysis of tax and revenue data by the nonpartisan Tax Foundation, were published in 2006, but the broad pattern doesn’t vary much over time.)

Depending on how aggressive a fiscal hawk he wishes to be, Obama could also try to offload onto the Confederacy of the Takers North and South Dakota and Montana ($1.73, $1.49 and $1.58 in benefits, respectively), but this would probably only work if Canada agreed to allow overflight rights for American aircraft to reach the West Coast states of Washington, Oregon and California (88 cents, 97 cents and 79 cents on their tax dollars, respectively).

Possibly, the new United States would need to negotiate certain protectorates in the Confederacy — Austin, New Orleans, South Florida and the like — the way the British did in Hong Kong. Then there is the awkward matter of what the breakaway nation would do to its poor.

But once the handout states left the union (and took with them a proportionate share of the federal debt), the rest of the country could enjoy lower taxes and the high level of government service typical of the Northeast, the Great Lakes and the West Coast.

There would also be non-financial benefits. Tampa’s Central Command, now caught up in the David Petraeus sex scandal, would be the new nation’s problem. And the exit of several Southern representatives from Congress would give Democrats a solid governing majority.

Of course, secession isn’t as easy or as painless as an electronic petition, and Obama couldn’t offer a redress of these petitioners’ grievances even if he wanted to. Nor should he want to: The Union of the Makers would be fiscally healthy but spiritually poor without the Confederacy of the Takers.

Yet would-be rebels from the red states should keep in mind during the coming budget battle that those who are most ardent about cutting government spending tend to come from parts of the country that most rely on it.

  • Guest2020 says:

Those who favor secession are acting like Americans. Our American ancestors seceded from England. They had to fight their way through it and they won. The Confederate States acted like America’s forefathers by fighting for independence for a second time. Unfortunately, Lincoln didn’t want to let go of the power or the taxes that the South brought to the table. We lost that war because Jefferson Davis wasn’t willing to sink to the depths that the Union army did. Hopefully, our next fight for independence will be successful, but I seriously doubt it. Our government schools have been indoctrinating the masses for far too long.

  • WhoopDeeDoo says:

For all of you who are putting down the people signing this position and even for the one who said that whoever signs it can’t be a Christian I have three words for you: “Declaration of Independence”.

Our rights come from our “Creator”. The government exists by the “consent of the governed” therefore the “governed” have a right to the dissolution of the government.

Rather than chicken out and try to run away like cowards, I’d much rather see this state remain in the union and fight for the things that make this country great. Washington has plenty of issues but they can be corrected…we can be a part of the solution.

Where’s the petition to ignore the petition to secede? :-)

  • It is humor to hear americans speak about christ and country in the same sentence.
When christ returns (according to ur bible) the countries of the earth will be united in
Battle against him. So exactly why are you loyal to a government controlled land mass called
A state? Is ur citizenship here or in the kingdom of God? Hell will be full and now you
Know why. But as the prophet says (as for me and my house we shall serve Ehyeh-God of
    Abraham,isaac, and jacob.) @theJudahite

  • Guesttenheimer says:

If you don’t like it, do something about it! That’s what these petitions are all about. We all know they will never happen, but you can bet your @$$ that this is the voice of the people saying they’ve had enough!

Some serious changes are coming my friend! The societal leeches sucking on the taxpayer teat need to find a new source of food!

  • Sick of Stupidity says:

This bs has really gotten too far! For all of you supporting this, you’re wasting everybody’s time and nothing’s going to come of it. Your man lost, tough! Deal with it, you can vote again in another 4 years. You all should be ashamed of yourselves supporting this psychotic idea and to think you call yourselves Americans? Seriously? I NEVER heard anybody mention secession when GWB was in, and he literally destroyed our country. I should make a petition that anybody who signs that stupid secession petition should be forced to go live with the Taliban since that’s what these right wing losers want, then call your country UTL (United Teabaggers of Losers!).

  • Das Weibstück says:

You are a total twit if you think all Obama voters are welfare sucking northerners. All the southern white people I know that voted for him are educated and middle or upper middle class. 4 more years ! DEAL.

Just asking? Wonder what many of the people who voted for Obama would be saying now if he had lost? There were threats of violence and riots if he did – so what does that say about you?

With that being said, no I am not happy with him winning but the seceding thing is ridiculous. If you don’t like it, pack your bags and go. We’ll help you load your suitcases on the plane, the bus, the train or your car or you can stay and act like Americans and fight for the better.

  • Guest2020 says:

What you fail to realize is that there are a lot of people out here who have wanted to secede for a long time. The problem has been that there haven’t been enough of the others who are fed up with the way things are. The further along we go on the path the federal government is taking us, the more support we find for secession.

You may not have had any liberal states wanting to secede when Bush was president, I don’t know. But there are blue states who have had secession movements in place during Obama’s administration. One is New Hampshire. There has been secession talk in that state a lot over the years and they are talking about it again. California was talking secession in 2010.

There are also ongoing secessionist movements in Vermont and Hawaii and they haven’t changed their purpose with the changes in administration.

Thomas Jefferson said in the Declaration of Independence that when a government becomes tyrannical then it is the natural right of the people to dissolve the union with that government.

And just remember, if not for secession, we would probably be speaking the Queen’s English.

  • It is with out doubt, that our government has drifted FAR from it’s routes over the past 100 or so years, and now represents the very thing that we seceded from originally in 1776. We, the American people, need to revisit our routes and purge our authoritarian federal government, in pursuit of freedom, liberty, and justice. I have links to all 50 states petitions, and most of their duplicates here:

This is a historical movement that now has over a MILLION supporters. Do what’s right, America. Let’s get our freedom back!

Just a few responses for you…

Taxes – Where do you think the Federal money comes from – TAXES – so instead of paying into a system that wastes money on ridiculous things & supports the freeloaders of the world we can take what we pay in Federal Taxes and put them into our new nation’s treasury and be just fine.

Fuel Prices – Nothing to stop the states truely wanting to seceede from banding together and making one nation instead of many different small ones or acting cooperatively – Louisiana & Texas will on our side so no worries there.

Investments – My money in my 401K & Mutual funds is mine. I am sure we can find our own way to recreate these bigger & better.

Car Prices- Cars are built all over the world and there are car manufacturing locations in the areas that want to secede. We don’t have to buy crap out of Detroit.

Federal Disaster Aid- I’ve seen FEMA & the Red Cross in action – we’ll take our chances with local disaster relief groups – we can take care of ourselves.

  • DasSTFU says:

Go back to your crime infested public housing, urine lined streets in New York or wherever you came from.
You have nothing to offer here.
If I want to know what u think, I’ll ask a doorknob.
Godless, left-wing, socialist fear monger. Go back to how you did it up north.

  • Office Fan says:

Wow, people sure do have short memories. Lets look at what would happen if you were somehow able to secede:

Taxes: Be prepared to pay 2x to 3x more in taxes, because once you secede all the federal money that helps support schools and highways disappears.

Fuel Prices: Enjoy your $7 or $8 per gallon gas, because you will be importing close to 100% of your fuel from somewhere else. Do you honestly think North Carolina has billions to invest in building its own refineries?

Investments, 401K, Mutual Funds: Kiss all that goodbye.

Car Prices: Last time I checked, North Carolina has little in the way of automobile manufacturing capabilities so get ready to pay tariffs and additional taxes on all the cars you import from Detroit.

Federal Disaster Aid: Next time we get hit by a Fran or Floyd, don’t expect to receive all that Federal money you get from a Disaster Area Declaration, have American Red Cross assistance or have FEMA deliver food and temporary housing. Expect to be living in a tent for a few years…just look at the people in Haiti still trying to recover from an earthquake.

Honestly, the level of stupidity of some people amazes me. They are so blinded by their anger at the results of the election they react childishly and completely fail to consider the long term consequences. Grow up people!

  • Common sense says:

If any person that have signed this petition and still call themselves a Christian, I doubt if they ever knew the Lord!……….God shall do the separating……We are called to do everything we can to save those who do not know the Lord!…Judgment will not start with the homosexual community, but will start with the Christians who refuse to share the gospel and separate themselves like spoiled children!

  • Guester says:

you really think it’s all the yankees infiltrating the south starting these petitions? Hmm. If that’s the case, let me go to a state where I can vote they way I want. My candidate didn’t win this time, but at least no one told me how I had to vote. I’ll stick to my democracy any day, even when my candidate doesn’t win.

  • JohnJohn says:

“The Texas secession petition has nearly 80,000 signatures. The White House has not yet responded to the petition.”

That’s because they know THEY DON’T HAVE TO!! Our Government has grown FAR to big! You want a reason??? THERE’S your reason. We’re tired of too much government! Period!

    Now where do I sign?

  • Guest, Just Another says:

Its a shame, but the most this will do is add your name to some government watch list. Good luck with that one.

For a state to secede, it would have to sue the United States for the right to do so, and you have to ask permission from the U.S. to sue it. Not likely to ever happen.

  • Mr.T says:

Please take a moment to consider just how narrow minded the idea of secession is for any state. Unless you have your money buried in the back yard, you might need that federal insurance that protects your savings and investments? You might need to put gas in your car or food on your table. It,s nice when the lights come on and the heat works. Oh by the way how about that Medicare that pays your doctor bill? Lets see Social Security wouldn’t have any importance to you, would it? John just walk over to the mirror and look at a real Right Wing Nut Bag. America spoke last Tuesday, you guys lost and lost big, big, and bigger. North Carolina voted about 50/50, not exactly a mandate. Maybe it would be fair for you to give some consideration for all and get off the renegade train. A little time in bible might not hurt.

  • CLynn says:

Thank you. My thoughts exactly. We have only seen this now due to the dictatorial nature of this president, too much government, and too many people wanting entitlements instead of work. Some of us want to take back the country we used to be.

Secession is not a joke. Ask Dr. Mike Adams how many times this subject been broached since the Civil War. I would guess very few until recently. I like many Americans resent the government taking my money to give to lazy bums who don’t get off their butts. Don’t call me fortunate. I broke my back and worked long hours to achieve what I have.

less government… more people helping people…
It is people helping people that has made this a strong and united country.

They just don’t realize that the people were helping the people just fine before the government took it over. Article 1, Section 4 did not exist in North Carolina’s Constitution of 1776. It was added to the amended Constitution of 1868 after North Carolina and the other Confederate States were forced back into the Union at the point of a gun. So under the intent of NC’s forefathers, the right of secession should have never been rescinded.

  • Marty says:

This is from our NORTH CAROLINA CONSTITUTION

    Sec. 4. Secession prohibited.
This State shall ever remain a member of the American Union; the people thereof are part of the American nation; there is no right on the part of this State to secede; and all attempts, from whatever source or upon whatever pretext, to dissolve this Union or to sever this Nation, shall be resisted with the whole power of the State.

True, but I think everyone is taking this to seriously. No one is going anywhere. This is more of an issue of civil liberties or should I say the erosion of. I don’t think you will find anyone who signed it that thinks that this will really happen. Nor is this all about Obama either. Over the past 10 years OR more, there has been an all out assault on the constitution and civil liberties by the federal government. This started with Bush and that is why people voted for change but that is not what we got. What we got was the hole sail slaughter of our civil
liberties. This is about the FED, all of them and how out of control they have become. For God sake, we have our own boys and girls out there dyeing and for what I ask you? This is war, call it what you wish and I ask you where did this authority come from? The people? Congress? Have we not lost enough? Can we afford to be imposing our will? Should we? Take this petition for what it is, A no confidence vote on the FED by the people and feel free to sine if you agree.
