WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It was slow going for motorists this morning on US 421 near the Isabel Holmes Bridge after an accident that sent several people to the hospital.

Highway Patrol says about 10 a.m. a SUV pulled out in front of a tractor-trailer causing it to jackknife.

Three people went to hospital to be checked out.

Traffic was back to normal by this afternoon.

Will there be any follow ups on this article?
    Where were they taken?
    Are they okay?

  • Debbie says:

All are OK 2 with substantial injuries

Why on earth does NCDOT allow left turns out of the truck stop at the base of Isabel Holmes bridge? From this article, I’m not sure if thats what happened.

Still, left turns out of this business, onto a six lane (four straight, two turn) 55 mph major highway – at an intersection – are very, very dangerous.

I pulled out of the gas station trying to make a left into the turn lane 2 months ago and go nailed by someone flying through that intersection.. Totaled my brand new car. I got blamed for failure to yield. That has to be the most dangerous intersection in all of Wilm. I have seen 4 other accidents in the same place since mine two months ago. The city better step up to the plate before more people get hurt/killed here. I can’t believe they let them build that gas station where they did.

I can’t believe the city ever let them build that gas station right on the corner of a major corridor/intersection, with no traffic signals in or out. The only (1) entrance in/out of the Scotchman is a terrible design. When you turn left out of the gas station into the turn lane, you have to make sure people coming south on 421 aren’t also trying to turn into the turn lane to go over the bridge. You could have someone who tries getting in the turn lane at the same time and then you are stuck in on-coming north-bound traffic. I was recently involved in an accident much like this one at this same exact location. I have also witnessed 3 other major accidents at this same location in the past few months. Someone is going to get seriously injured or killed here if not already. I moved to Wilmington a year and half ago, and my biggest complaint is the traffic and road system in place. I have never seen such poorly designed road systems.
