Navassa leaders say K-9 case should have been handled better

NAVASSA, NC (WWAY) -- During the Navassa town council meeting, leaders addressed the issue of former officer Kevin Smith and his fight to keep his K-9 partner.

The town's attorney, Norwood Blanchard, says the town's efforts to fight for custody of the dog was because of the amount of money the town invested, from vet bills to training.

Smith says Mayor Eulis Willis has a vendetta against him after Smith arrested the mayor for drunk driving last year.

Mayor Pro Tem Frank Willis had some stern words for the attorney with how the small claims case was handled.

While addressing Blanchard, Willis said, "If it had been done properly, there would have been more concerned citizens in that courtroom and probably would have something to say on our behalf. From what I saw down there, there was nothing or nobody to represent the town of Navassa."

Blanchard responded, "What the circumstances were surrounding the donation of the dog was all that should have been covered, but I don't have much control over what the other side has to offer."

Also at Thursday night's meeting were Smith's attorneys, who were there to collect a check they say is owed to their client after his resignation. They say Smith was given a check Wednesday night for vacation time owed to him but still has not received money for about 1,400 hours of overtime.

Perhaps the reason there were no "concerned citizens" in the courtroom is because they were embarrassed at the way their "leaders" handled this situation.
