Charges against NC lawmaker after wreck dropped

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Charges against state Rep. Larry Womble have been dropped in connection with a deadly car crash.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports that prosecutor Steven M. Arbogast of the N.C. Attorney General's Office filed dismissal papers Monday in Forsyth County District Court.

Arbogast said an investigation revealed information such that the state doesn't believe it can prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Womble faced a misdemeanor death by motor vehicle charge after the car he was driving last Dec. 2 crossed the center line of a street and collided head-on with a car driven by 54-year-old David Carmichael, who was killed. Police said Carmichael had a blood-alcohol content more than three times the legal limit.

Toxicology results showed Womble didn't have alcohol in his system.

Womble didn't seek re-election.
