FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) – An 18-year-old Fayetteville man is in custody in connection with the shooting death of a man known for helping the homeless and feeding wild cats throughout the city.
Fayetteville police said Terrane Kulaia Dukes is charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in the death of 67-year-old Wolfgang Joppich, who died Sunday night from a single gunshot wound after he was found lying on the ground on a local street.
Detective Ronnie Hutchins told a news conference that investigators think others may have been involved in the shooting and robbery. Hutchins said there are people in the community who know the others who they believe assisted Dukes.
Dukes is being held without bail in the Cumberland County Detention Center. It’s not known if Dukes has an attorney.
