CHEROKEE, N.C. (AP) - A Cherokee man is among three people arrested in the shooting death of a woman during an armed robbery in a motel parking lot across from Harrah's Cherokee Casino.

Chief Ben Reed of the Cherokee Indian Police Department said 36-year-old George Nobles is charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery and two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon.

Reed said 76-year-old Barbara Preidt of Shelbyville, Ind., was shot and killed on Sept. 30. The couple had just returned to the motel and was getting out of their car when a masked gunman approached them and grabbed the woman's purse. The chief said Preidt struggled to hang onto the purse before the robber fired a handgun at close range.

Reed said federal charges are pending against the three.
