WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Leland officials are on site at a fire in the wetlands off of Highway 74-76 in Brunswick County. The fire began around 1 o’clock Saturday afternoon and is being contained, according to Brunswick County Fire Marshal Scott Garner.

Garner also says the cause of the fire is unknown. He says the fire is in an area that is unreachable to officials.

Fire Chief of Leland John Grimes says at this point, crews are just keeping a close eye on the fire. He also added that he has talked to environmental specialists at UNCW in the past about marsh fires. He says controlled fires in marshes actually help the wetlands burn off old, dead plants.
