Early morning traffic stop leads to arrest

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A routine traffic stop early Wednesday morning led Wilmington Police into an encounter with a convicted felon in possession of drugs and a firearm.

The incident began when an officer stopped a Ford truck for a minor violation. A check of the female driver’s license showed that she had a history of possessing illegal narcotics, so the officer requested permission to search the truck. As the officer waited for backup to arrive, the male passenger, Brandon Devone Smith, began urging the driver to decline permission to search.

When the second WPD officer arrived, Smith started to get out of the truck. When he refused to get back in, he was ordered to put his hands on the top of the truck. Instead, he made a move back toward the truck and one of the officers took him to the ground.

Due to a strong odor of marijuana coming from the truck, officers conducted a search of the interior. When one of the officers opened the glove box, a silver revolver fell from where it had been lodged inside. Officers also found a small plastic bag containing a white, rock-like substance that tested positive for cocaine.

Smith was arrested and taken to police headquarters. While there, he attempted to discard a packet containing a substance that proved to be marijuana.

Smith was ultimately charged with carrying a concealed weapon, violation of a domestic violence protection order, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana and destroying evidence.

Smith also was charged on three outstanding warrants for other offenses. He is being held at the New Hanover County detention facility under $28,500 bond.

The driver, Yolanda Inez Feggins, age 30, was released with a written warning for not having a working license plate light, which was the violation that led to the initial traffic stop.
