BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The streets of Brunswick County are a little safer this evening after some suspected drug dealers got a rude awakening by the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.

The cells at the Brunswick County Detention Center are a little more crowded after Operation Christmas Crackdown rounded up 29 criminals on various charges.

“What it involved was subjects around the county who are wanted on warrants for drug charges,” Brunswick County Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Del Routh said.

Those outstanding warrants gave a joint task force of sheriff’s deputies, Shallotte and Leland police, and AirOne authorization to seek out and remove suspected criminals from the street.

“Mainly it’s to minimize the drug problem and those who are dealing with it,” Routh said. “That’s the main purpose of this is to stop the illicit drugs and stuff that are on the street.”

The arrests further re-enforce the message law enforcement is trying to spread around Brunswick County.

“I would say crime doesn’t pay,” Routh said. “You may end up coming over to the detention center here after we serve the warrant.”

Brunswick County Deputies are continuing their search for the six people they were not able to track down this morning.
