Rep. Walter Jones, R-Farmville, soon will begin his first term representing parts of New Hanover and Pender counties in Congress, but he will no longer hold one of his important committee posts.

House leaders earlier this week booted the longtime congressman from the House Financial Services Committee, and numerous published reports suggested it was because Jones has repeatedly defied House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, on votes. Jones has voted against the speaker nearly a third of the time.

He’s been in Congress for nine terms representing parts of eastern North Carolina, but the recent redistricting put the local areas in the 3rd Congressional District.
