SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — Surf City Police are warning residents about a new scam being reported.

Assistant Chief Ron Shanahan said police were contacted by a resident after someone called the intended victim and said the victim’s mother had been in a car crash.

The scammer then said the victim’s mother had run into the scammer’s Mercedes, “and he would kill her if the victim didn’t send money”.

“The victim in this case had just spoken with his mother and knew she was fine,” Shanahan said. He goes on to say that it’s normal to be frightened when someone calls and says a family member has been in a car wreck.

While the victim stayed on the phone talking to the con artist his wife contacted the supposed kidnap victim to make sure she was safe.

Shanahan says to make sure you stay calm if you get such a call, check on your family members and then call police.
