WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington 10 member Willie Earl Vereen and a group of supporters, including many from Wilmington, will deliver more than 14,000 petition signatures requesting pardons of innocence for the Wilmington 10, to the governor’s office in Raleigh today.

A member of the governor’s staff is expected to be present to formally receive the petition names.

Organizers say the items delivered will include a video of Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo apologizing to the Wilmington 10 during a 2011 event at UNCW commemorating the 40th anniversary of the events, including the fire-bombing of a Wilmington grocery store, that led to the arrests of the group’s members.

“The DVD is being included as powerful evidence that if the present-day Mayor of Wilmington can admit to the world that all of the Wilmington 10 were ‘done a tremendous injustice by our judicial system,’ before the now infamous racially-tinged files of Wilmington 10 prosecutor Jay Stroud were even discovered, then Mayor Saffo’s opinion deserves to be carefully considered now, along with over 14,000 people from across this state and nation, as more reason why pardons of innocence should be granted to all of the Wilmington 10,” Cash Michaels, coordinator of the Wilmington 10 Pardons of Innocence Project, said in a statement.

I went to NHHS in 1969~70-71and I believe the right people were caught and tried. It’s a sad time in our local history only made worse by a small group of individuals. This group was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

What did they do, walk door to door in Creekwood and every other rat nest in the area?

Saffo was an idiot for issuing that apology and now it will most likely come back to bite Wilmington in the backside. The convictions of these murderers were thrown out due to a technicality, not because of their alleged innocence.

And remember Nelson Mandela had a automatic weapon and hand grenades on him when he was captured, he was a terrorist and look what the hero they made him into! Wilmington 10 must be next!

Maybe not, but that doesn’t change the fact that they’re guilty. Like they say, “times were different back then”, but facts are facts. They did it, got caught. Now they want money for it. The free checks they get aren’t enough already?

Reason number 1,344,058 why Saffo shouldn’t have been elected.

Yo…My uncle is one of these men…they got did wrong and deserved to get money for this injuctise…you feel me?

2015 years 10 months ago

I feel ya…I also feel the memories of being a young girl and being afraid and being on cerfew in our fair city because nuts like the ten were going around fire-bombing and shooting at police officers and scaring the begeezus out of everyone in Wilmington. Your hand is out for cash…come on and admit it. It was a technicality of the justice system….but they still terrorized us and they should be held accountable. If you get money from their injustices then I deserve money from you because they caused me the first real fear I have ever known. And that can be said of a lot of locals during that time. If this goes your way through Beg Perdue then I think all of us that suffered during that time because of the terror the Wilmington 10 caused should be teaming together and getting a good attorney and coming back at you for pain and suffering. They didn’t do it…HOGWASH!!!!

I imagine that many who signed the petition weren’t even alive when this happened. They just know that their black brothers are innocent and want them pardoned.

Explain that to the store owners that lost their businesses from the fires they set. Explain that to the people that were injured.

You can’t go back and re-write history to make it politically correct.

You Racisit Scum. It is a good thing that the demographics of this country are changing and you pieces of trash are dying out. How could you say that Nelson Mandela was a terrorist and furthermore be upset about someone fighting to prove there innocence. I know how because your sole and spirit are filled with hate. You Klan SOB are the terrorist and your way of thinking is what has caused the real terror all over the world. I wish I could see some of you face to face! Trailer Park Trash!!!!

Watch how the white lawyer Addison’s kids were attacked and beaten up in the movie To Kill a Mockingbird, for representing an innocent black man in a rape trial. This case was decided by the 4th circuit court that prosecutor witness bribery and tampering caused the guilty verdict and prison sentences. Why didn’t the local court just let the system work to get to the truth in the Wilmington 10 trial, that is the issue. If those people accused did it, there is no need to bribe state’s witnesses or tamper with sworn testimony. Why also, did President Lincoln’s brains get blown out for the same issue a hundred years earlier for abolishing slavery? Watch To Kill a Mockingbird.

It’s too bad some won’t admit crimes happen because of race.

They were guilty then, it doesn’t matter if some men and women were racist then, the fact they are guilty doesn’t change.

When everyone can admit a crime happened, they were responsible, and the 10 were creatures of their own making, can justice be truly served.

However, blind following, ignoring the truth, by ANY race, doesn’t serve justice or make them innocent.
