BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A man was hit and killed on Cedar Hill Road in Brunswick County this morning. Highway Patrol says a truck passed a school bus in a passing zone around 6 a.m. and hit 61-year-old Samuel Howard Peterson who was walking in the road.

The bus was traveling East on Cedar Hill Road and was not stopped or picking up any students at the time of the accident.

The driver of the truck, John Hinson, told investigators he did not see Peterson walking in the street because it was before daylight. Both the truck and the bus, which Highway Patrol Sgt. Matthew Hardee says he believes had children on it at the time of the accident, stopped feet away from where Peterson was hit.

Troopers say Peterson died at the scene. The accident is under investigation, but not charges have been filed at this time.

Everyone is arguing about how the bus wasn’t stopped. No it wasn’t stopped but that doesn’t mean you have to rant about it and make a big deal. Then after your rant you say praying for everyone involoved. Half of you have probably never wittinessed what I had to that morning. Just calm down and think a second. Is it really worth arguing with a person you don’t know about whether they’re right or wrong?

I am acquainted with the family and know they would not want anyone to be passing judgment. They are not pasing blame and would not want anyone to be doing so unjustifiable. Keep MrPeterson’s family in mind as Iknow their prayers are with the driver as this is something he has to live with and adjust to.He too is a victim.

You still passed a stopped school. doesn’t matter is it’s day light or dark out. It is against NC State Law to pass a stopped school bus. John you should be held fully accountable for your actions you were in such a hurry you could not wait a minute or two behind a STOPPED school bus instead you killed an innocent person who had the right away.

Even though you are in a passing zone doesn’t mean you pass a stopped school bus.

May Mr. Howard rest in peace and my thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

People need to slow down life is too short to be in such a rush you will get there when you get there.

Like Allison, you did NOT read the article! THE BUS WAS NOT STOPPED!!!!!!!!!! The driver of the vehicle was legal in passing the bus as if it had been a car. He was in a passing zone and the bus was not stopped! You people really need to read an article all the way through before you open your mouth to falsely accuse someone of breaking a law. Abby55, you need to be held fully accountable for your ignorance and lack of reading skills!

This is why share the road signs are everywhere in the United States. Drivers of autos now a days are deluded into thinking they are better than pedestrians, bycyclists or moped drivers. They kill and otherwise maim thousands yearly, because they believe that they have the right to speed. They carelessly fail to share the road. And frequently, they are not contrite after they have killed some one. Just because you have a big SUV, and a false sense of your importance to the community does not mean you can radomly kill people through carelessness. My father who was in law enforcement for 45 years told me as a teenager that he slows down in case someone might be on the pavement. He slows down for green lights because they can quickly turn to red. These killers are for themselves, and they think they can run over anyone in the road. They will stop for nothing, and they will not even slow down to see, if someone’s father is trying to walk off his recent heart attack. They should go to prison and have the keys thrown away!

Did the pedestrian have a light? Was he walking on the side of the road? If the answer to either of these is no, then he was just as much at fault.

  • Trooper

Where did this come from!? The trooper did not give ticket so the driver must have done everything legal! Why would I walk on wrong side of road in the dark or at least nearly dark!

  • John Henry

stay out of the road. You may get hit by a car and die. Also, if you slow down at green lights and around “pavement” like your Father, you shouldn’t be driving.

  • Allison

This is just horrible! :( And it is sad that people can’t remember a simple rule: DO NOT PASS A STOPPED SCHOOL BUS! That stop sign is on the bus for a reason. I didn’t realize how many people ACTUALLY break this law on a daily basis until my 4 year old started riding the bus home from preschool. Every day, when her bus comes to a stop, there are always 2-3 cars that zip right by without any hesitation. I’ve taken down a few license plate numbers but it doesnt seem to really help the sitaution. Anyway, so sorry to read this :(

Perhaps you should read the article more carefully.

This is absolutely awful for all involved!! This is something this man will live with for the rest of his life… I did not know any of the individuals involved but if you read the article it says he passed the school bus in a passing zone…so therefore the bus was not stopped, he was following the law, if it had been after the bus had stopped he would have been charged w/ manslaughter or worse… I am lifting up in prayer all who were involved in this tragedy including the witnesses on the bus!!

  • Just Me

The article says the bus was not stopped.

  • Details matter

Just as you did not see the part of the article that said the school bus was “NOT” stopped or picking up any children I am assuming you also missed the part that said that it was a passing zone and the dirver did NOT see the pedestrian. Don’t get me wrong your comments are well founded but are not the case in this incident.

  • guesty

From the story: The bus was traveling East on Cedar Hill Road and was not stopped or picking up any students at the time of the accident.

The bus wasn’t stopped picking up children, it was moving and the other driver passed it.

  • SouthEastNC

was the bus stopped when the driver passed it?

  • Guest7969

Your reading and comprehension skills are SEVERELY lacking!

  • Guest19

Clearly you didn’t read the article before you commented. The school bus was NOT STOPPED. So don’t start accusing the driver of breaking the law. While I strongly agree with your remarks regarding the law and the lack of respect to this law, this driver was not breaking any law at the time of the accident. This is just an unfortunate incident and I pray for the families of all of those involved.

  • Not gus

The article says the truck passed the school bus in a passing zone. The school bus was not stopped for a pick-up or at all. It was moving. This makes it a legal movement to pass the bus. Was it wise? I can’t answer that but it brings up another question. Why are there school buses on the road at 6:00 a.m. and at 6:00 p.m.? School board members who approve waivers for schools to start at 7:40 and dismiss when they get good and ready, should step up to take some responsibility for this traffic death.

  • CountyJustice1

Did you even read the article or did you just decide to read the headline and comment? If you had read the article then you would have known that the school bus “was not stopped or picking up any students at the time of the accident”.

Read before you post. Just saying….

  • Guestbrunsco

Where did you see that the man passed a stopped school bus? NOWHERE.

The article said “in a passing zone” and I am sure the person at fault is probably devastated.

    raying for everyone involved!

  • Beach Bum

Are you stupid or just plain ignorant? School bus wasn’t stopped nor was the bus picking up children. So what does any of your yammering have to do with the pedistrian being struck and killed? Was the pedistrian wearing high visibility clothing and carrying a light to let others know where he was at?

Simple physics. A 4000lb vehicle will win all day and twice on Sunday against a 160lb person.

Put down the crackpipe woman. Smoke affecting your knoggin.

  • ilmncnative

Loss of life is horrible, but the school bus was not stopped at the time and was not picking up students.

  • GuestChuck072

Evidently poster Allison didn’t read the article reporting the accident since it very plainly stated the bus was traveling down the road when it was passed therefore the victim was walking in the roadway

  • CoastalJade

“The bus was traveling East on Cedar Hill Road and was not stopped or picking up any students at the time of the accident.”

  • t

the school bus was not stopped nor did it have its flashers on read the whole story before you judge

  • golfnrev

Can’t you comphrend anything you read? The School Bus was NOT stopped. The driver passed the Bus in a Passing zone. To pass a bus in a passing zone is not breaking the law.

  • B M

There are times when one would do well to engage brain before they engage mouth, the article we are reading says the driver passed a school bus in a passing zone and it says the bus was NOT STOPPED!, meaning it was not illegal to pass the bus, next thing the article says was it was “6:00 a.m.”, that would mean it was still dark, which would also mean it would be impossible to see a pedestrian walking on the road unless said victim had a light or reflective clothing, both of which I highly doubt, turning this into a very sad and tragic accident without any monday morning quarter backing, the driver will carry a lot of weight on their concious for the rest of their life.

  • Guest guest

The bus was not picking up kids or had stop sign out!

  • John Henry

Sometimes it’s hard to stop in time. I agree though, people should definitely stop for a stopped school bus. There is however no law against passing a school bus once it’s moving again though so quit staring at it and riding next to it people. Pass it quickly before it stops again. BTW the bus in this article was not stopped.

  • Lern2Reed

It clearly states “The bus was traveling East on Cedar Hill Road and was NOT stopped or picking up any students at the time of the accident”, so what was the point of your rant? Has nothing to do with what caused this incident. I’ve seen several people walking on the road lately at dark wearing dark clothing, no flashlight/reflector, walking right on the white line. Not a smart move IMO.

  • CMG5

If you will read the article, it states that the bus was not stopped at the time.

  • BoliviaParent41

FYI, the school bus wasn’t stopped. It was moving. The driver passed in a passing zone.

  • BoliviaParent41

FYI. The bus wasn’t stopped, it was moving. And 2nd he passed in a passing zone! I feel for the loss of the man, however, where was the wrong? Accidents do happen. I just pray for the family during this loss.

  • concerned citizen

It doesn’t say in this article that the bus was stopped, and in fact it wasn’t…he just went flying by it in a passing zone. How is anyone supposed to know someone would be crossing or in the road when it is still dark out? We have a lot of people on our road and the road this happened on who walk in the road or very close to it, ride bikes back and forth across in front of you and you never know when someone will be in the road. I worry constantly about accidently hitting someone that is in the road especially at night and have been scared many times by how close or how people are in the road when its dark just walking instead of walking along the road in the grassy area, it is scary!

  • Steven B

I agree, and was the bus stopped to pick up kids or was it just stopped??

  • Renfield

Great troll, you got my vote as being one of the best!

  • Guest CHUCK072

I can’t believe so many made comments to the article without reading
and understanding what it said- Come on people, learn to comprehend
what you are reading before opening your trap

  • Jordanna

First let me say my prayers go out to everyone involved!! This was an unfortunate and trafic accident! However, almost everyone that I have seen make a comment has jumped to conclusions without reading the story like they should! No one here is really at fault! The bus was MOVING not STOPPED! And the driver passed in a passing lane! It was early and it was still dark out so the driver didn’t see the man walking until it was to late! And honestly no one expects someone to be waljing in or on the side of the road that early in the morning! The driver didn’t break any laws, it was just an unfortunate accident! So many who are making comments are acting like you have never passed a moving bus before, we all have so don’t act like haven’t! And please read the article carefully before you go passing judgement on some else. That is the problem with people today, everyone is so ready to condem someone else, well he who without sin cast the first stone! Also please remember the kids who were on the school bus, my nephew being one of them. I’m sure some of them are tramatized from witnessing the accident, so please remember them as well! My heart goes out to all involved!!!

  • Florence Chavez

Thank you for remembering the children….

  • Guest20013

The article shows that the bus was passed in a passing zone. It was not stopped, It is legal to pass a school bus in NC. The problem here is people walking in the road. Read the article before you comment.

  • Florence Chavez

Why weren’t the parents notified immediately? I am amazed that the school system can send automated messages about meetings, events, etc. yet no message was sent…

My daughter was on that bus and I don’t care whether they saw it or not, Brunswick County Schools have no business not notifying the parents immediately…

  • Florence Chavez

I was informed by the school bus garage that it was her bus, now school says it wasn’t….

  • Florence Chavez

My daughter was also on the bus…I hope your nephew did not see anything…

The Peterson family has my deepest condolences.I pass Mr.Peterson every morning a few yards from where he was struck.I witness him get off the road and waite for approaching vehicles to pass. Its unfortuniate this happened, but that area has no lights and the visibility is 0.So no one can condem anyone in this matter.
